what current printer is linux compatible?

what could i get that is in say, office depot and that would be SIMPLE to install? i just need to print out spreadsheets and word processing documents. i think i prefer b/w laser. does that fact the most printers are multifunction machines these days make most printers not compatible so that i couldnt just go pick out anything? model number and link if possible, thx
 
Although CUPS configurations can suck, I have always felt like I haven't had a problem finding a driver for most printers. It is just a question of getting it to work right. Just do your research on the model you would like to buy before heading to the store, and verify a PPD exists before you make the purchase. That being said, getting a multifunction printer to support all of its capabilities might make it a little more hit an miss, but the printer functionality should be easy enough.

You could always go the route of getting a network printer too. I have never had a problem setting those up, and you have the added benefit of printing from anywhere (provided you can get it safely exposed on the networks you want to print from).
 
Brother generally has good Linux support. I have owned the Brother HL-2170W [0], for ~4 years. At first needed to use the Brother supplied drivers [1]. But after a while CUPS included them. Take a look at this [2,3] for some options. I would avoid multifunction machines.

Needed a new laser, and got this HP 1102 from NewEgg.
Plugged the USB into my Ubuntu 12.04 system which said "you've got a new printer"
and 5 minutes later I was cranking out pages fast.

No problems, no configuration, clicked on "ok" 2 or 3 times.

could you link that,. i went to newegg and pasted that model in and no printers came up

was it this model EXACTLY and not a slightly older or newer model: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16828115639

has that been a good printer and how long have you had it. that looks like a current printer that i could probably pick in office depot right?

I think your best bet is to find a printer you like, then see if it's compatible. DuckDuckGo "brandx abc123 linux", and you should be able to see if it works, and how easy it is to make work.

I have this printer and it works very well in Linux.

Yep, that's the one. Very fast print speed also. Flawless compatibility with Ubuntu 12.04
Had it about 6 weeks now. Should be available everywhere.
