What current laptops have an IPS display?

I'm kinda looking - really won't be in the market for 6~9 mos. but thought I'd shop around: (I've started other threads before - I can't help it, I like gadgets AND I hate the build quality of my current laptop!)

With a laptop (and what with IGPs getting progressively more powerful) I'm thinking one of the most important factors is the display: which current models offer an IPS display option? I'm looking for something sub-15" and preferably a simple, solid build (I'm thinking business models).

The only one that I know of right now is the Lenovo X220 - I'm really hoping that they'll refresh the U260 come late '11/early '12

I too am looking for the exact same thing. I've been using IPS screens since the IBM T42 and T60 ThinkPads. I can't go back. I purchased a TP T500 last month and still prefer to use the older T60 just for the screen.

It is getting tougher to find anything for mobile IPS other than a few select HP laptop models (I forget which ones), but the prices are north of near $2K IIRC. Some of the X series ThinkPads might still have it as option.

Then of course there is always an iPad1/2. 🙂

If you can make due with the older hardware, get a T61 (not T61s). The last Thinkpad to feature a 4:3 screen. 16:9 does not belong in laptops.

Not many, sadly. Dell apparently have pretty good quality displays for their laptops, but they're only TN. The Macbooks have IPS displays, as well as Lenovo's X-series Thinkpads, and HP's Elitebooks.

😕 I think it's the iMacs that have IPS displays, not the MacBooks.

Thinkpad X220: 12.5" 1366x768 IPS panel. And you can configure a well-spec'd one for around $850 right now, which is an excellent price for an ultraportable with a 2.5 GHz Sandy Bridge i5, IPS and 12 hours of battery life.

i think the macbook pro's might have it. not sure though.

and the HP elitebook with dreamcolor, but they are really expensive, not sure they even make them anymore but anands did a review on one model last year.

Nope, all Apple laptops have TN panels.

I second the recommendation for the x220. Currently they are very reasonably priced and if you sign up for lenovo's newsletter they will give you a promo code for an additional 10% off. They should have a place to sign up on the main X220 product page.

apple uses LED backlight so its really bright. which is nice. but folks that do actual work on their displays turn the backlight WAY down because they work in a controlled light setting and it would blow their calibrations to have the ambient lighting sensor change the effective color temp. and because they usually work in the dim light where you don't need alot of nit. unlike an apple user who sits outside at a bright cafe facebooking.

I've got every freaking hp display including the elite LP2480zx which iirc still costs nearly 2grand and honestly for what i do - i don't use dreamcolor to its full capability. I don't have a quadro card or a 30-bit card, i do enjoy the ZR30W but again i use a standard nvidia card or mac pro card and well that just doesn't do it justice.

I do say i enjoy the macbook air bright display 6-bit and all. I can imagine an outdoor fashion photographer would still shade his/her display to keep the calibration ok over the day rather than have to stop and recalibrate all the time.

p.s. remember there is 6-bit IPS 🙂 it may carry IPS but it isn't 10-bit if that matters to your eyes.

Check out the new Dell precision workstation laptops, they are advertising an IPS screen as an upgrade. They look pretty nice to me.

Bumping for an update.

I'm looking for an IPS laptop myself. Currently have a Core i3 (SB) lenovo but the screen is absolutely horrible, dithering galore. Which makes pr0n viewing rather despicable during a business trip overnight hotel stay. That and I also need a slightly more powerful mobile solution as well.

I like the Thinkpad X220 but the price seems kinda stiff, even for the base IPS configuration, especially when compared to other laptops that are much cheaper for the exact same specs (minus the IPS screen).

I mainly need a mobile workstation with IPS for photoshop/CMS 5.5 work. Any particular recommendations?

Those cheaper laptops generally have a lot of corners cut like cooling, battery life, keyboard, build quality, etc compared to the x220. I've had my x220 for a year now and it's been one of the best tech purchases I've ever made and was worth every penny.

Be sure to sign up for the Lenovo newsletter since they frequently give out promo codes for the x220 in it. You should at least be able to save ~10% on it with them.

N-n-n-necro!

Well, I've "settled" on a Dell XPS 15 w/ the RGB-LED display upgrade (and it looks gorgeous); however if you can hold out, there is a rumour that the next iteration of Apple Macbooks (and ergo, their PC competitor/counterparts) will house very-high resolution displays. Admittedly it's just a rumour at this point, but one can hope . . ..
