What current AMD or Nvidia cards have approx. the same power as a 7800GT?

I've currently got an EVGA 7800GT and it's plenty of power for what I do. I'll be building a new system in the not so distant future and I wonder what current cards are at least as powerful as my 7800GT?

The only reason I'd get a new card is that this one is 4 years old and I don't know how much more is left in it's lifespan.

Thanks,
BGC

^^ That's a decent card, but I think this might be a better deal.

$45 free ship, $30 after rebate. 4650 low-profile NON CROSSFIRE edition w/64-bit interface. For desktop/Aero/HD playback it's great. For gaming, not at all (same w/7800GT though, it was great 5 years ago).

Edit : for $5 more, this is probably better, even though it's a 4550 : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125250

Better brand + double the memory clock.

If you're not building yet, then it might be that the HD5570 is out by the time you do build, and that should (presumably) equal or outperform the HD4670, and have a more advanced feature set, as well as use less power/produce less heat.

They are scheduled for the 6th of Feb, so any recommendations made now will likely change by then, and it's under 2 weeks away.

The O.P. said his 7800gt has plenty of power for what he does.
He wants a replacement not a upgrade.

Really a 16 sp gt210 is close, but I just can't recommend that junk.

A 48 sp gt220 is a little faster and will fufill his needs.
4650's on the ati front is a good choice also.

ANything more is more then he needs.

Truth. Any of this stuff will do 2d/h264 as good or better than a 7800GT. OP doesn't mention gaming, but if he is gaming on a 7800GT and isn't complaining, then yeah a 4650/GT220 would actually be an upgrade.

+1.

It's hard to recommend a card slower than a gt220 or a 4650 when they are only a few dollars more than their significantly slower options (gt210, etc.). These cards have good feature sets and would do everything (and more) than your current 7800GT.

The 7800GT was a decent card, and played Oblivion on a single-core machine pretty well. Not fast by today's standards, but it ran pretty cool and wasn;t a huge 11.5" card.

I'm not a gamer, but I don't want a real low end card either. I build a machine and keep it quite a while, as you can see by my current 4+ year old card.

My usual philosophy buying graphics cards and cpus is to get something that is 2 or 3 steps below the top of the line. At the time I got the 7800gt it had just come out but the cards just below it hadn't dropped in price. So it didn't make sense to get the lower version given the price difference at the time.

I was just curious what my current card compared to, so I could decide what my price/performance ratio would be when I build a new system.

Thanks,

any low end card that does h264 decode, aka any recent gpu is fine. no gaming= no point getting a gaming card. just waste power for no apparent reason. 2d desktop duty is not something that requires massive gpu power , its simply insignificant burden to todays chips. even to igp

It is entirely possible that IGP will be enough for you, but you don't list what other stuff your build will include. If you are building an AMD system (785/790) or a Clarkdale system
you should try to see how the IGP works, you can always get a discrete card later. I don't game and expect to be happy with my new Clarkdale IGP even though this is written on a box with a 4350.

For a discrete card I would focus on the cheapest DX11 card I can find. It is less likely to miss future features and the only DX11 cards this far (ATI 5xxx series) also have low power consumption in idle/2D. That will make noise and airflow management much simpler. Get the cheapest ATI 5xxx card available when you need to buy. Right now that is the 5670 at $99 but 55xx/54xx/53xx cards are expected shortly at lower prices.

If $99 is the cheapest of those and you feel that is too much: Get a 4670 or a 9600GSO, both are good value for money and significantly faster than the 7800GT.
