I have a 10055T running at about 3.6Ghz and I can get about 12,000PPD. But this is also my main computer, so it is in use while it is folding. I'm sure that lowers the PPD a bit. I also could have overclocked it higher.

Here's the thread : link

It's MarkFW's best CPU rig on F@H. The thread ended up being a high energy AMD vs Intel "discussion".

I talked to him about it, he had to eventually turn off HT on the i7 920 and had to drop the oc down quite a bit on his 1055t. on his most current wu's he's getting ~ 16500 ppd on the thuban and 11k or so on the i7 920. looks like I might have bought the wrong cpu :|

@peter, based upon what mark told me I would say go for 1055t, unfortunately I can't help you with gpu info.

well, mark originally told me that they were nearly identical when ht was on, with a very slight edge going to the 920. then the next day he responded and gave me these numbers. I understand that folding ppd can vary quite a bit depending on the WU, but the info that he originally gave me had the 2 cpus very nearly identical. I've done almost no folding, but I do trust mark's opinion since he has a good sized folding stable and seems to spend quite a bit of time on it.

Guys, to be honest, the PPD numbers on the 2 are all over the place. Right now its 7k for the 1090T@3.6 and 7.8K for the 920@3.7. Earlier (and on average) the 1090T beats the 920.

Every 5 hours the numbers are different !!! I would do the 1090T again (or a 1055T), but the 920 is not farr off on average, just spendier for the platform.

mark, what kind of temps do you get with your 920 @3.7? I'm running in the low 80's right now with an ambient of 77f, so, um, er 25c ambient, which seems pretty warm to me.

at the same ambient 77f, I get 60c full load 24/7 (megahalem)

Update on the GTX460 performance: (search for user "Beyond" on project page)

F@H: just under 10K PPD (thread)
DNETC: ~51K PPD (my HD4850s are getting ~76K PPD)
Collatz: ~76K PPD (pretty good for NVIDIA)
GPUgrid: Won't run but maybe quick fix coming on Monday (thread)
Milkway: Probably requires version 3 (no data yet)

I was just going to post that ...
Here is my decision: I have ordered today one ATI Radeon 5850 and two GTX460 GPUs.
The Radeon 5850 will go into my i7-920 (which now has an old NVIDIA-GPU), one of the GTX460 will go into one of my i7-860 crunchers and the second GTX460 will go into my working computer, which uses the built in GPU but has an C2D Q8300 OC'd to 3.2GHz. All three comps have powerful PSUs (650 - 750W) with enough connectors.

If I have funds left I'll get myself a AMD Phenom II 1055 - system. But that will have to wait 3 - 4 weeks ...
I will run MilkyWay, Collatz and some other GPU- enabled projects and see which one is the best for me.

Cool. I was going to suggest building a newer, quad-GPU cruncher like mine, but that might be overkill. Can you imagine four GTX460s in one machine. Wonder what kind of PSU you would need.

once i move... i'm going to consolidate some gpus i have, and stick four 4850s with my my phII940 that's in my asus m3a32 board.. it has 4 pci-e slots.. i think they'll run at 8x... i think a corsair 850HX should be powerful enough to run them.

I was considering that: one of my i7-860 has a mobo with three PCI-E slots. If I have calculated correctly a 1000W PSU should be sufficient for that - but the output of heat would be too much for the case I have ... for that I would like to have one of thoses cases with one or two 120 - 140mm fans on top of the case and the PSU in a separate compartment at the bottom of the case. OTOH: then I would have to clean the air filters of the case so often ...

Well If I get one more "work-hard-for quite-some-time" salaries, then I will build one monster:

  • Mobo: ASUS Rampage III Extreme, X58 (has 4 PCI-E usable with right case)
  • CPU: Intel Core™ i7 Quad Processor i7-960 (much cheaper than the extreme-edition, but quite similar to the output)
  • RAM: Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 1600MHz 6GB (to start with ...)
  • GPU: Gainward GeForce GTX 460 768MB, 4 units (efficient, good price)
  • PSU: Corsair HX 1000W PSU (has sufficient connectors...)
  • HSF: Noctua NH-D14 (I have very good experience - nice for OC-ing)
  • Case: Thermaltake Element G Midi Tower (Has enough space for all components - I think)
  • HDD : 750 Mbyte (I have that one)
  • DVD-R/W: (I have that one)
The total would be in the order of USD 3000 - 3075.
And it would probably be a crunching monster ...

I'd recommend a good after market cooler for those video cards.. The difference in temperatures are night and day for me with a zalman on my Diamond 5850.. I can leave my GPU going in milkyway all day, and not hear the GPU at all, and it runs cooler.. Now I just need to replace stock cooling on my Phenom 965BE.. It's great for anything other than all four cores going 100%.. That little fan is loud..

They are on their way ... then I need to install them.
Before that is the PrimeGrid Race - and I am not going to mess with working computers - because in this race the GPU is not needed!

Soon, really soon!
