I am building a rig for friend who will run it stock, with stock cooler (I will use AS5 if it comes without thermal grease), and currently I have E6400 for $218 at the Egg.

Told him about price cuts on 22nd, he said buy me more power. So what CPU should I get for ~$218? I was looking at 6600 @ $224.
However, price table post on this forum (I lost the thread), shows that 6750 is for about same price as 6600!

Also, do I need to ditch Super Talent DDR2 667 RAM and get some DDR2 800 RAM?
Motherboard is gigabyte DS-3.

Thanks!

edit: or even a quad core "The 3rd Qtr Q6600's at $266" ?

I would like to know the answer to that question as well. The X-bit testbed was done with DDR2 800.

Anyone know?

Not if he is going to run a 1066 or 1333 fsb processor at stock clocks. bottleneck for that ram would only come at >1333 fsb so no worries.

Alright thanks :)

His parents suddenly said NO!, so he'll wait till summer (not august, more like june/july, because after that he moves to Canada and I won't be able to build him a system) - well, good things come to those who wait...maybe by then I'll be able to build a system with R600 graphics and either AMD Barcelona or Itel's quad core CPU for the same budget ($1000, no monitor)!
