I have an ASUS P5B-E and an E6600 CPU.

I just replaced the stock Intel heatsink with a Thermalright XP-90, no fan. The heat sink is very close to the 120mm case fan.

I don't remember seeing the CPU temp with the Intel heatsink ever above the mid-40s C.

However, right now with no CPU activity and the new heatsink, it's running in the mid-70s C.

This is very worrisome. Did I do something wrong? I did apply heat sink compound when I installed the Thermalright heatsink.

Thanks - Jim

I just set up my new system, similar to yours, with the P5B Deluxe and E6600, although I'm using the Zalman 9500. At first, I was getting temps around 50C, which I wasn't happy with. Tonight, I decided to clean the CPU and the Zalman, and when I took the Zalman off, for some reason it was hardly making any contact with the CPU! Little to no arctic silver had even touched the underside of the Zalman, it was still clean as a whistle, and I'm surprised my CPU didn't overheat. I cleaned, reapplied, and reset the Zalman, and now I'm getting towards 40C idle. I could probably do a little more work to get it lower, but I'm not worried about that right now.

Is the fan running. If not the 120mm fan may be drawing enoug air across the heat sink to hold your temps in the 70's.

Forget what I said. Maybe you need to put a fan on it.

I laid a 92mm fan on top of the heat sink, blowing down on the heatsink. The temps went down to the mid-50s. Still don't think that's right. I put the old Intel heat sink/fan back in and CPU is comfortably in the mid-40s again.
