What cpu should I get?

Ok, my system in my sig, the 1.8ghz p4, the 6200>6600 mod, 512mb ram, etc. I want to upgrade the cpu. I'm not sure what to choose. I want good performance(better than my 2.5ghz oc), and I'd like ht, although not completely sure on that. Are celeron d's any good, like a 2.93?

I want a 3.0E ghz, but don't want to spend $180, about $100-130, is more in my budget.
Also, there are some pentium m socket 478 cpus, are they good? They're expensive for sure.

Also are the celeron d's very oc'able? I don't have vcore on my board, but do have fsb and a pci/agp lock. Would the lower celeron d's oc high? The 2.4 p4 might oc well too, at least in the newegg reviews.

Starmicro has the best selection of "c" series northwoods, a great cpu for overclocking. I run my 2.8c at 3640, a 30% overclock. It runs alot cooler than some prescotts, even when overclocked. If you want retail boxed with 3 year warranty, you might find a 2.4c in this format still available. All the others I've seen are oem cpus with about 30 days warranty. If you must have prescott, try the 3.0E, a great value. Be sure to use the hardware monitor software with your board, or mbm 5.370, a free download to keep tabs on the cpu temperature.

I'm worried that your board may only support 400 FSB Processors since you have a 1.8 originally. If that is the case then the highest you can go isa 2.8 GHz chip with the 400FSB. I have one of these gently OC'd to 3.08 GHz and it runs cool and rock solid. I don't want to push it to any kind of limits since its my work comp and needs to be reliable mor than fast.

Never mind, I'm a tool. I completely missed your mobo listed. So your cool with almost any FSB speed processor. I'd personally go for a 2.8c as suggested above already.

Looks like you've already modded your rig to a gigabyte 865pe board. If that's the case, then a low end "c" series p4 would be in your price range, and should overclock well. If starmicro doesn't suite you, then search pricewatch for a retail boxed 2.4c. Good luck.

Ok, thanks guys, it seems that you don't recommend the celeron d's. I'd like the 3.0E, but $180 is a bit much, I'd like a 2.4C, but the 'egg no longer carries them, but they may be expensive as well.

Any more thoughts on this?

The Celeron D can overclock VERY well. Im talkin 1Ghz overclocks
But it is still a small cache. The 3.0E as well as any Prescott out there runs VERY hot unlike any other current cpu. Plan on buying an xp90/120 or Zalman if you go that route.
I have had multiple Northwood core chips such as a couple 2.4C and 2.6C.
These are EXTREMELY good chips, Soon to be a real rarity. Get a nice Abit IS7 or an Asus p4p800 and some pc4000 and you will be able to OC to 3Ghz very easy while still runing cool at default or very slighty higher Vcore.

If you must buy from the "egg", check their refurbished section. Sometimes they carry "c" series p4's. But starmicro may be a good alternative. Check their reseller's rating, and go for it.

I heard that Newegg refurbs were crap... Lots of complaints about them being deffective.

Why must I buy a new board? Anyway, those boards aren't micro atx, they won't fit in the case, plus, if I can't afford a $180 cpu, then I don't want to get a new motherboard and cpu(and I guess case, since the oc'ing boards are atx). My matx board has fsb adjustment and pci/lock, just no vcore, but I have my 1.8 at 2.5 on stock voltage. If I can't find a "C" p4, then I guess I'll get a celeron d, which would be the best oc'er, I want to oc above 3ghz.

I guess it'd be easier/cheaper to oc a celeron, as if I got a 800fsb cpu, my ram wouldn't have any headroom, the celeron d's are 533, so I have lots of ram speed left to oc(with pc3200).

XP90/120 and zalmans are aftermarket HSFU, among the best cooling on air you can find.

I'm in a similar situation... also have a p4 1.8ghz and looking to upgrade.
I have a similar (if not the same mobo) Gigabyte 8-IG, not 1000mk, how do you mod it so that you can let it accept the 800mhz fsb cpu's?

No need to buy a new heatsink. The old Intel heatsink from your 1.8 will work fine for a celeron.

But a celeron D(presscot core)? My old hsf doesn't have a fan, just a heatsink, but a case fan pulls air through it.

Would a 2.4ghz p4 533 fsb, or a 2.66ghz 533fsb celeron d be better? I want to oc as much as I can on stock voltage.

I would go for the celeron at $73, if overclocking is your goal. It should run a little cooler, but performance will be limited, even when overclocked. It's a great value, if you don't need top performance.

I'm running a Northwood P4 2.4b at 3.06 gig now, it is a 533mhz cpu useing the stock hsf. I am happy with this O/C, because I can run all the latest games with no problems. See my sig. There you have it.

Ok, I just ordered. I decided against the celeron d, since it has less cache, and performs slower. I got a 533 fsb p4 2.4ghz, it's a prescott core(1mb cache), so it'll run hot, but I couldn't find any cheap northwoods. I don't think my boards bios supports celeron d's anyway. It says it supports presscot on the box and on the website. I hope it works well.
