hi all, I have a socket 989 RPGA on my laptop Toshiba satellite l775-197 cor i3 1st gen and I want to upgrade my CPU, but I don't know which generation is capable with because I read that it can work with either 2nd and 3rd gen. so if that's correct I would like to buy I cor i7 but I don't know which one i should get.

The way I usually check what processors are supported is to check the top of the line spec model in the same series--if it could support the 3rd gen, then you've got a shot if your motherboard is the same as the top spec (and if not you might be able to easily swap it).

If you don't find the top spec model with a 3rd gen, I would say you are stuck with the second gen.

I would also do some searches with your exact laptop model and the cpu you want to upgrade to. This way, if someone has done it or attempted it before you can find links to their experiences. Good luck!

People in the above thread were unsuccessful upgrading to 2nd and 3rd gen parts.

Link from above thread listing potentially supported CPUs

However, the only ones guaranteed to work are the ones that toshiba says works. I don't know if Toshiba lists any supported CPUs or even has the product information for your laptop, but I would check there first. I'm having a hard time finding information on the l775-197, but you can check your product/serial number at their website to see if you have any luck.
Looks like you're probably stuck with a 1st gen i7. If it's a first gen i3 (35W), then it probably comes with the i3 380m? Unless your laptop has a lot of thermal headroom, you might want to stick with a 2C/4T part, since all of those are 35W. There are some 4 core parts, though their TDP ranges from 45-55w.

Moving to a dual core i5/i7 part mostly gets you turbo. moving to a 4 core part is risky and depends on the cooling solution in the laptop. FYI from a quick google search, it doesn't look like the l775 line was ever sold with a 45W+ processor.

As long as you're not maxing out the processor all the time and are willing to keep the fans running at full power the entire time, you probably could get away with a 45w with some good thermal compound and the fans floored all the time.

I've done something similar on desktops with 95w processors with 65w heatsinks with floored fans.

I think from what I read about your exact laptop, the 2nd gens won't work because the bios doesn't support them. (or it might be the 3rd gens if they fit too).

Edit: it's the 3rd gens that won't work.

I use cpuworld and passmark to figure out how cpus compare to what I already have when looking to upgrade.

For example, if I'm upgrading from a q6600, I google 'q6600 cpuworld' and 'q6600 passmark'

And then I will compare them to the upgrade which is let's say a q9400. So I can get results like the following:

If you want to tell me what the exact processor you currently have, I'll check out what i7s might be best.

Actually scratch that as the number cores doesn't seem to change between the i3/5/7 like it does today. Either of these two choices that should be plug and play:

i5-580M:

i7-640M:

And it should be a solid kick in the pants as the single thread performance increases significantly:

If you want to try a 2nd gen i7 2620m or 2640m are the dual core options.

For quad core, 2630qm through 2860qm are the 45w options.

The i5 variants like the 2540m are also worth considering, since they're cheaper and almost as fast as the dual core i7. For example, i5 + more ram or ssd > i7 dual core.

I would run cpu-z on the laptop and identify the motherboard first. Then check the specs to make sure what cpus it supports.

My Acer laptop is a G1 socket but only works with 1st gen cpus.
