Hey fellas. I know, dum question. However, I’m still using old sandy bridge cpu right now. Im looking at grabbing an x470 board from a friend. What’s the best bang for buck amd cpu for it?

Right now (and for the foreseeable future), a 3700X or 5600X when they are around the $270 price. The 3600 would be an option if it was sub $200, but it hasn't been that low since the whole shortage thing started.

If you're mainly a gamer, go with the 5600X. Otherwise, get whichever is on sale/cheaper.

My vote would be for a deal on a 5800X. There are good deals to be had on these both used, and sometimes brand new. Just make sure your board's BIOS is updated for the Ryzen 5000 series.

Warning: Coffee fueled stream of consciousness incoming.

I hate that we are in a time when it's not wrong to call $400+ on a CPU and cooling bang-for-buck. But it is going to age well. Strong IPC, enough threads, high clocks, nothing but win.

The 3700x is a strong choice too. Includes adequate cooler, has the threads, good IPC, and a better value than the 3600.

But I am a budget hardware aficionado. Bang for buck means something different in that context. The best all around B4B AMD in this terrible market, is a used 2700x. B4B market for me is $200 and under, which you should be able to pick one up for.

For gaming, and also because of how hard it is to find a 3600 at a reasonable price, the 3300x is the best B4B AMD at the moment at $150 BNIB. Obviously, patience and some time spent searching can yield better deals on CPUs. For an expeditious purchase the 3300x is a great pick, given the cost for a board does not have to be added.

I think its an msi x470 gaming plus or something like that. Yeah, bang 4 buck for me is less than 200, but using same architecture as a higher model that has more cores or speed.

Since this is a a long coming upgrade, I would definitely consider spending the extra bit to get a 3700X at least. If not 5800X. But it also depends on your usage, and on the rest of the parts of the build. For instance, for gaming, depending on your card now, you may want to save a bit on CPU and get a better GPU. Also would depend on games played and resolution of monitor.

I've got one kicking around here too. Want it?
I am more excited about the 5600G. I don't know what it is with integrated graphics, I definitely have a thing for them. Going back to when companies like SiS, ATI, S3, and nVidia were putting them on boards in the early part of the century. I mean they are hot garbage at gaming in the scheme of things, but there is something fun about discovering what they can do.

If I come across a 3500(X) , I'll toss that in for free, you can compare with the 5600G.
We hijacked this thread, but it seems like it ran its course so no harm no foul? I hope. And is the only difference between the 3500 and the X, that the X has 32MB L3 instead of 16?

Of course I finally break down and buy a 3700X from B&H Photo two weeks ago, and now it seems like everyone is trying to get rid of theirs!
Ain't it always the way? I don't know how many times I have done the 300 at the hot gates routine where he shouts - HOLD!....HOLD!... and then cave a bit too early.

Whoops. Anyways, not really sure, but I'm guessing that you're probably correct. I think both 3500 and 3500X are 6C/6T.

Nice! Feel kinda dumb now
Nah man, it's all good. You said you were not certain. It is not like you asserted to the negative. And the page layout MSI uses is garbage. You have to use the side panel to access the CPU support list.

@digiram If you do get a fast CPU & GPU a high refresh rate monitor will be the last component that will compliment the rest. The 390Hz Acer AOPEN 25XV2Q is on sale at Micro Center, also for $399. You said you had a buddy in Chicago so thought I'd mention it. If the build is not for gaming then disregard..
