what could have happened to my PSU?

It a xclio x14s4p4 600w....I bought it new a couple years ago, it's never been abused or left out in the damp or anything. Anyways it's been working just fine...I shut down the system like normal last night and today the PSU is dead. First thing I tried was disconnecting everything from it and jumpering pins 15 & 16 which didn't start the PSU. Then I hooked the PSU to a different mobo and it wouldn't start, then I hooked a different PSU to the original system and it fires up...so I guess it has to be the PSU?

There were no electrical storms or anything last night....I don't understand how it could just quit working. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help.

Sometimes it happens like that. Xclio ps's aren't exactly top bin parts so for it to last as long as it has without taking anything out with it is a good thing. Don't know what you replaced it with but make sure it has enough amps to do the job or it can go out on you as well.

I bought a used Enermax eg701ax http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...ATT=17-194-005 for $45 shipped. It should do the job.

I hope it's not too old. That Enermax, like all of Enermax power supplies built then, suffered from premature failure after a year or so of use. Enermax at the time was using a brown silicone "glue" in their power supplies that, over time, turned conductive. Enermax has since switched to a non-conductive white silicone "glue" in their power supplies.....but one that old....I'd be wary of it.

If you value your PC at all, I'd suggest not skimping on the PSU. A bad one can not only die as you have seen but, it can take out other components with it if it fails catastrophically . This is not to say that "good" PSUs cannot fail. They certainly can. However, you decrease the odds greatly by using reputable and tested PSUs.

I had an old Enermax psu that stopped working after about 4-5 years of use. I tried another psu and the computer booted fine. I'm guessing the psu just died.

Interestingly, the psu had trouble starting my computer after it was just plugged into the wall outlet for the last year of its life. Unplugging a few things usually helped it start up. After shutting down, I'd plug everything back and the psu worked fine, until I unplug it and plug it back into the wall outlet.
