sometimes when i restart my computer all my desktop icons would jump back to their default positions to the left of the desktop, and i have to painstakingly move them back to the places i want them to be.

what could have caused this and what are the ways around it?

thanks!

Right click on desktop, select arrange icons, make sure that the auto arrange selection is not checked. That would be the first place to start.

If windows is doing a registry repair - that will do it. (You said it happens after crashes, very likely). Do you watch the monitor as it reboots?
