What could cause intermittent LCD artifacts?

I've got a notebook that functions perfectly normally, but after launching certain apps, it develops visual artifacts (lighter hued freckles). When I reboot they go away until I laugh the apps again.

It can't be the panel because the problem is intermittent.

Almost every user of an Asus notebook with the X1600 GPU is experiencing this.

sounds like gpu to me too. tho it might not just be overheating, mem or core might be running at an unstable freq. download "atitool" and run the artifact scanner

Underclocking doesn't help....I tested. In any case, it's not tradiitonal artifacts....jaggies, sparkles, etc....it's just lighter colored freckles.

I'm looking at the desktop right after I boot and it's perfectly crystal clear. I launch City Of Heroes and then close it. Suddenly my desktop (dark background) is slightly blotchy and stays that way until reboot.

Driver bug? Probably not if only Asus has the problem.

Stick a small hose over one of the air inlets and connect it to a fan with a shroud on it, blow some serious air through. Maybe even underclocked it's overheating.

Obviously there's some sort of hardware issue if every Asus notebook with X1600 sees it. It could be a bad batch of GPUs, or it could be an issue with the design of the circuits on the mainboard, or the LCD controller.
