What could cause a loud engine?

Not a loud exhaust, like a car that needs a muffler, but a loud ENGINE. I usually refrain from accelerating my car very quickly because of how it sounds when I do so. When it reaches the higher RPMs before switching to the next gear, the engine gets very loud. But whenever it's crusing at that RPM level in another gear, it's not overly loud at all. Only when reaching an RPM peak before switching gears.

What aspect of an old engine do you think could be the cause of this?

You got it! But why would you assume a Ford and not any other old engine with the problems that Pepsi listed?

It's not any kind of BROKEN sound, like a rattle or a gurgle, and it's definitely not from the exhaust, it's from straight under the hood.

I've been using 5w30 oil and have been recommended against using anything thicker by my mechanic MANY times despite what advice I told him I received by others.

I've been doing oil every 3k, it's due in about a thousand.

Motor mounts...wouldn't that cause more of a rattle than just a loud engine sound?

I have no idea what an exhaust leak is, or what sh!t I'm supposed to be lubing.

Some of the more free flowing intake systems allow more engine noise to be audible through the intake system. Import nuts seem to LOVE that.

Your exhaust system doesn't start at the muffler.

Yes, at least in my experience. I've had to replace motor mounts like three times in my car, and I only bought it six months ago. 😛

But yeah, broken motor mounts only caused a sort of rattle sound, and at that only under somewhat heavy acceleration.

Edit: It would help if I read the OP, eh? 😛

That's exactly how it was when my motor mounts are broken. (I thought you meant that it was loud all the time, not just under acceleration) And now that I think about it (remembering that sound), I can see how one could mistake it for a loud engine sound...

Disclaimer: I am NOT a car person, so don't go solely on my advice 😛

Well I hear a little clicking under heavy acceleration, as well, but I always assumed THAT was from my motor mounts, and that the overall loud engine sound when accelerating heavily was from something different, perhaps one of the things Pepsi said?

I honestly don't know, it just sounded a lot like what was happening when I had problems with my mounts. Feel free to ignore me, I'm quite clueless when it comes to cars. 😛

It's probably your exhaust.

Bad exhaust manifold. Notice that the engine is directly to the right, with the front of the car towards the bottom of the picture.

1992 sable, good chance you've got a broken motor mount anyway. i had mine replaced 3 times on my 1991 taurus. the third time may have just been fscking midas taking me for a ride (they broke my transmission at the same time)

Yeah thats a bad one alright. Usually they are just cracked or the gasket is notsealing properly (bad gasket or broke bolt/stud).

1991 ford tauruses have the highest failure rate on transmissions EVAR.

yeah, but that was the second transmission.
