What could be wrong with my boss's monitor?

Long story short, my boss bought an E-machines a couple months back and I set everything up and installed all his programs for him. On his old crappy system he was running a screensaver so I assumed he would run one on this setup also.

Anyway he told me today that his monitor is slightly buzzing but more so the image is shaking slightly. Without being there I ran through my usual tech repair list until I got to the question of asking him if he is still running a screensaver and he said no he leaves it on 24/7 and at that point in my head I just said "you gottta be kidding me"

No assuming that is the problem the fact that he left the monitor on for a month or 2 straight probably leads to the problem, but im not sure what the problem could be... any ideas? Thanks

Probably EM interference. Tell him to turn off any fans or devices with motors nearby the monitor. This is a severe problem here at work. We just got all-new workstations with new (crappy) HP monitors. Desk fans interfere with them from 2ft away.

Yes I agree... airflow moving into the sidevents on the monitor will cause it to distort. Also anything magnetic will cause a screen to warp and/or turn funny colors and flicker or sometimes make a hum/buzz... (perhaps a big ol' speaker is too close?)

also it could be the refresh rate playing tricks on his eyes... (some people are more sensitive to such things..like me <.< 85hz or I see the flickering/shaking on a crt...but don't get the same effect on an LCD)

depending on the sound of the "buzzing" it could be a few things. usually if you can hear it clearly it is a bad sign (as in obnoxiously loud bzzzz!!!BZZZZZ!!!!BZZZZbuynewmonitorreturnmekillmehateworknosleepBUZZZZZZ). sometimes UV office lights with some types of monitors also cause a very slight buzzing (as in... in absolute silence while slightly straining your ears you get the tiny bzzz hum)

try enabling the refresh rate to its highest setting and use the degauss after moving all fans away..also if it just happens to be a close air conditioning vent or something... the refresh rate can hide the flickering caused by wind in most of those types of scenarios.

and perhaps trying it once with the uv lights off heh just to see if it is affecting this particular monitor if all else fails....

most modern crt monitors are fine to be left on constantly with no screensaver. It is more of a novelty than a useful feature at this point in most people's cases... aslong as they turn the monitor off...or use it for something... atleast 3 times in a 24 hour period... which if it is his office computer Im sure it gets used enough.

GL with that.
