what could be the problem here...

could my psu be dead... or close to death ... my pc has been powering off for a while without my interference, this morning i try putting it back on and nothing, no power there's a led on my hsf, when i flip the switch on the back of the psu the led blinks for a fraction of a second and that's it. where can this problem lie on the mobo/cpu/psu ?


cpu: sempron 2800+
Mobo: asrock am2nf6g-vsta
psu: codegen 430w
hdd: 80 gig wd
gfx: 8800GT

I'd guess PSU first, then MB. First check the wires, make sure everything is plugged in firmly. Then try a different PSU.

I second it being the PSU. Definitely doesn't sound like CPU, IMO.

ok tested the psu last night it works hotwired it to work alone all readings on it good, so it boils down to either the board or the cpu.

if the cpu is bad the board wont boot ? or like wise ?
i have to get another cpu to test this tho i'm afraid....

If you haven't done so already, bring your system to minimum config...in other words only what you need to post. 1 stick RAM, CPU, VGA, Power, and the start button See if you get the same results. If this yields the same results, pull RAM and then VGA one at a time to see if the symptom changes, if it starts up the board should sound post errors with either one removed. You've got to isolate one piece at a time.

Note: "hotwiring" your PSU, IE running it with no load is NOT recommended. PSU's are designed to run with devices drawing power.

I understand why you did it, was just an FYI. Did you find anything else out?

The best way to rule out the power supply is to swap it. A test like you did, while it will say if the Voltages are ok, is not an indication of a good power supply. It can put out the right Volts, but not be able to supply the Amps (current) which is what the computer will pull in order to work.
Seen it happen before. OK on a no load test, and does not work when under a Load.

it was indeed the board. well i'll have to do some saving up and get a whole new rig
