What copy protection does Dirt 2 use?

I got burned with Dirt (1) -- retail/boxed version -- even after getting all patched up (which was meant to address the problem) the game still will not get past the disc check on Vista 64 bit. Didn't want to bother to try the no CD checks...I uninstalled and used the Starforce removal tool. Didn't realize it came with Starforce, otherwise I would never bought or installed it....shame on me.

However, I want to give Dirt 2 a try...anyone know the DRM in this title?...as far as I have been able to tell it does not use Starforce right?...or should I just get it through Steam to be safe?

Thanks

I'm not sure what the retail box has, but if you do want to get it off Steam... you can actually pre-order Dirt 3 and get Dirt 2 for free. I've actually been tempted to do that myself!

I just looked it up. Retail DVD uses SecureRom. Regardless if you use the retail or Steam version, GFWL is used for the multiplayer portion.

Thanks guys...didn't realize there was a Dirt 2/3 deal...thanks for the heads up, will have to look in to that. Good to know D2 uses (only) Securom -- haven't had any issues with it, at least to date.

This is most unfortunate.

This is why I own DiRT on the PC ($8 used and post Starforce removal of course) and DiRT 2 (used at Gamestop) on the Playstation 3. I'll probably get DiRT 3 used as well out of spite. In this day and age there is no reason to include any DRM or Online systems in a PC game that aren't integrated with Steam if the game is a Steam title. Just make it a Steam only title and there's your precious DRM wrapper and multiplayer matchmaking ready for use.

pretty sure it's a gfwl title.

also dirt2 has been $5 very often on the digital distribution sites including steam. ~$4 on D2D.

Meh I never play Dirt 2 multiplayer anyway, or any other driving game for that matter. Most people are dicks who will ram you off the road.

This is exactly why I only play SP or with my friends. I tried playing GRID online a few times and 90% of people will just try to crash you out at the start of the race.
