what continent is australia under?

It's not 'under' any major continent (to the SE of Asia) but Indonesia/Malaysia/etc are above it.

I think the OP was asking why we call it "Down Under".

It's because of where it's located on a map in relation to Europe and North America.

Australia is a continent. It's also bigger than the US. THe land mass is bigger.

The US history books among many say Australia is a continent but there are other countries that do not consider Australia a continent -- like Latin America, IIRC. They just call it Oceania.
 
The continents name would be Oceania... Australiasia also includes Tasmania and Papa new guinea if im not mistaken.. i do know for sure australasia doesnt consist of AUstralia alone.
