What constitutes "normal wear and tear" on a joystick?

I have a Cyborg 3D USB here that after performing flawlessly (5 degrees of drift across 30 seconds?) that over the last month has degraded to useless. It's vertical axis gets thrown off by more than 25-50 points in the windows calibration utility over the course of a few circles and BF1942😀C is unplayable now...

Of the three joysticks I have owned, this is the only one I have ever had to have a hardware failure... my 12 year old Gravis Mousestick 2 and my 8 year old Microsoft Sidewinder 3D are still running great... this is rediculous...

Have I been missing something since USB joysticks became big?
Are my expectations too high?
Lastly... what do you guys reccomend for a joystick with at the minimumleast, two on-stick buttons, a trigger, 4-way hat, and rudder?

i had a joystick and somehow some of the shielding had scratched off. Started smoking. haha it was funny.
