I've heard many people say that they work in IT.

I used to think IT meant system administration/network administration.

Sometimes I hear it also means call center work

And here of all places sometimes I hear it also consists of software development.

anything that includes technology

Maybe you have a different definition of technology than me, but I would disagree with that.

I don't consider software development to be IT, unless you're developing software for internal use - to support other departments. i.e. a timesheet system.

You fix things that other people screw up or break intentionally to avoid work until you are able to fix with they broke.

You also get to write programs on your own time because you spent the bulk of your time fixing things people intentionally broke to avoid work!

i would think consulting work (like network design or deployment type stuff) is IT as well.

I once applied for the job and those were some of the things the interviewer discussed during the 'view.

True story:

I used to work at a big fish finance firm on Wall St as the systems analyst. We had one analyst call the helpdesk which was empty at the time to "remove some tech stuff" from his chair. Turns out that he ran over his Bose headphone wires connected to his Bloomberg terminal and made a tangled mess that he couldn't figure out.

I cut the wire :D
