What computer would you build w/ $1000?

I am trying to upgrade my aging 1Ghz Duron system, and I want some knowledgeable advice as to what I should go with. So I want everyone to imagine they are given $1000 to build a system from scratch, but the only components needed are a CPU, motherboard, RAM, HDD, and video card. Would you go for an AMD XP+ system or a P4 533mhz or something else?

Thanks,
Che

personally i am waiting for an XP2400+
what motherboard do you currently have ?
if you want a new motherboard i would either get a KT400 or nforce2(coming soon) based board
if yur old motherboard is socket a it might support the XP's so that is also a route if you wanna spend the money on cooler stuff
the 2400+ should be in stores next week
the 2600+ maybe a week after that....
the 2700+ and 2800+ maybe next month or something......

if you go AMD or if you go Intel make sure you get good memory like corsair xms or samsung don't get any cheap stuff, get atleast 512mb too
Vid card all depends on how much you wanna throw at it radeon 9700's are the best performance right now but still cost a pretty penny
so maybe a GF4 stay away from the MX crap tho
western digital makes some nice 8mb cache hard drives right now

lets see as for approximate prices

200 xp 2400+
120 for motherboard
200 for mem
300 vid card
100 hard drive

guess that's the ballpark
i didn't have time to really look around at prices but hope my ideas start conversation for ya

i just built a p-4 2.8 with corsair xms 3000 black ram 512 $622.00 shipped
a slick case (window etc)local $54.00
the epox 4g4a+ mobo $131.00
a ibm 15000 rpm hdd with a free controller $129.00 shipped
a 21 inch monitor off ebay with bnc 154.00 shipped
4 case fans a hdd cooler round cables for all the drives scsi cable and terminator $49.00
labtec pulse 424 speakers 5.00 local
$22.00 floppy drive cables new sound wires disposable gloves sandpaper etc...
total cost 1166.00

if you shop around you can find good deals

the video card (ati 9700 pro) i bought recently for my 1.5 so 1566.00

if you went a 40 gig hdd
2.4 instead of the 2.8
lose the monitor the case fans the scsi cable terminator the floppy and speakers i bought it would lower the price 560

ie a 2.4 and corsair xms ram 3000 512 mb stick an epox 4g4a+ mobo an ati 9700 pro retail and a hdd

the 2.4 is 185.00 the ram is 185.00 shipped with the cpu total=370.00
the mobo shipped is 131.00
the video card 326 to 351 + shipping
Seagate Barracuda ATA IV ST360021A 60GB Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM Hard Drive 95.99+ shipping

total 948 leaves room for shipping and handling

Pentium4 northwood 1.8A CPU+Cooling ($137 at newEgg.com)
Albatron PX845PEV PRO motherboard: integrated LAN, 6-Channel audio ($95 at newEgg.com)
512MB Kingston PC2700 DDR SDRAM memory ($138 at newEgg.com)
80GB Western Digital Special Edition Hard Drive ($109 at newEgg.com)
Leadtek GeForce4 Ti 4200 Graphics card ($132 at newEgg.com)

When you have everything assembled and OS installed, return to anandtech forms and post the following topics:

"I just got a Pentium4 1.8A system up and running, how do I overclock the CPU"
"I just got a system with leadtek GF4 Ti 4200, how do I overclock this graphics card"

Don't worry about voiding your warranty via overclocking the CPU as Intel can't tell if ya overclocked it. Likewise for graphics card.

Ok whats a good motherboard chipset to go with for a Pentium system? I know the i850E chipset is good, but its longevity is in question due to the fact that RDRAM is not gonna be supported by intel anymore. I am looking for a motherboard that I can keep for a while to come, and one that supports the highest DDR RAM speeds.

look at the it7 max2 it is a sweet mobo and has sata support and a sata adapter

80gb 108$ x 2( if you need that much or just 1 for less price)
it7 max 2 175$
sappire 9700 pro 320.00
intel 2.4 b 191.00(needs hsf)
corsair xms pc3200 512mb 169.00

total w/ 2 hd's no hsf= 1071+ shipping
w/ only one hd no hsf= 963 + shipping

add a nice heatsink/fan combo for maximum o/cing ability and your set forever

I'd get the computer that I'll be getting this week if this stupid company gets off their lazy asses.

Lots of great posts, thanks a lot for all the help. I've decided to go with an Asus P4PE board w/ P4 2.4Ghz, this way I can upgrade to a 3Ghz+ later on. Im going to add a 40GB Western Digital drive, but I am not sure about the video card. Any comments on this setup?

I like the reccomendation, but I would get a different mobo... I havent had any experience with Albatron before.

Yes, I really like xboxlpu's setup (thanks) but I have one question. Wouldnt it be better to go with an Asus P4PE board instead of the P4B533, since the PE board comes with the 845PE chipset, which supports 333Mhz DDR, can be used with the upcoming 3Ghz+ pentiums which use Hyper-threading, and includes Serial ATA? I think it costs something like $30 more at Googlegear. Or is there a reason to go with the P4B533 over the P4PE?
