what component on monitor is going out

I have an older iMac (orig, DV SE) and the display is starting to go. I there is a vertical "ribbon" about 1/4" wide that is brighter than the rest of display. It goes from top to bottom and the edges of it "wiggle" back and fortha a bit. the rest of the display is getting darker, the dark colors (current background) are almost black (should be blue). Double checked display settings and not overdriving the resolution or refresh rate (1024x768 and 75hz). The brightness and contrast settings work almost like an on/off switch now as in if you max them you can see the display and as soon as you move it it goes complete black. Just started doing this and I noticed the size settings were now beyond the edges of the display. Set them back but that didnt do much to help.

Anyone know what component on monitor is about to die? Just curious about this as I doubt it is something I want to fix. This is my e-mail machine so no huge loss if it goes and can use an external monitor assuming it is not the video card

anyone knowledgable about monitors care to offer an opinion about what is starting to die? Something on the high voltage side?
