d00d though canon cameras are nice the SD series is NOT a very good camera. If you search both here at anand and at steves digicam you will find that the SD series has problems that do not justify its price. Either look to another line of Canon cameras, or other cameras such as Sony's p-150 and p-200 which offer more manual controls and the p-200 (the newer model) also has manual white balance settings with a larger screen and both are 7.2mp. I perosnally own both. I looked for new camera and looked at the new SD500 but after reading many reviews and forums i went with the P200

I thought posting the question on ATOT constituted research, especially, if I research, and then see if the folks here come to the same conclusion.

I personally find ATOT to be too full of Canon fan boys, any digital camera question and Canon is the answer and all others suck. Not that Canons aren't good cameras and not that I don't recommend a Canon to friends if they just want "a digital camera" but there are other quality options out there.

For instance, have you looked at the Casio EX-Z750?

he is correct, Casio actually has a GREAT line of compact and ultra compact pocketable digital cameras with the Z750 being one of them along with the QV-R51 which are both on steves digicams 5-7mp top cameras. Most people just can't get passed the Casio name.

Another cam to consider is the Canon Powershot S70 which is also 7.1mp and considered "enthusiast" and is actually pretty small but not exact as small as the sd500.

hmmmmm... Do you think the Canon fits better in your pocket?

Never mentioned you wanted it to fit in your pocket just wanted a better camera :p

I am sure the slimmer cameras with the Leica lens they use on there camers will still produce a better picture.

Yes it took me 3. My first was a a s200 pocket camera I thought took good pics. I traded it for a Olympus that showed me the Oly took better pics then the canon. I go tmy tax money and wanted a better camera so I hit the wagon with all the fans of canon and bought a a75 that took maybe 1/4 of the shots I took indoors that were keepers.

I got a few more bucks and after not wanting to be screwed I check out reviews and put pic next to pic on all cameras with a big zoom under $400 and there was no challange that the ones with the FZ3 looked better then any camera in that range and even some that were even more money. I bought it. Then I wanted to edit video and found I didnt have a program to edit Quicktime so I stupidy traded for a Canon S1 IS after reading some reviews. The pics were not better but took better video so I traded it.

Well I just got done trading that off. With the canon when it did take a pic it looked good (still not as good as my FZ3) but I was getting 50% good shots and had to fug around with the camera to figure out a good shot and by then I lost my shot.

Next tax check I am getting the FZ20 and not going to buy another one any time soon.

FZ20 sucks for videos though...
<- owns the FZ15.

The SD500 uses a larger sensor than the SD300 and SD400.
So, the shortcomings of those cameras should really apply to the SD500.
In side by side comparisons of pictures, it looks like the SD500 is as good and slightly better than the S410 for example.

First off, I'd say nothing. I own the SD200 and it rules. The quality is just fine for my amatuer vacation photos where I just need some snapshots, and the video quality is most excellent. Nothing cooler than skiing down a mountain w/ my g/f filming her as she goes with my handy SD200. At the bottom I just pocket the camera 'til next run :)

Now, to this Panasonic lover. I HEAR YA! I just got the funds and purchased the DMC-FZ5 (in black) and couldn't be more excited. I'll get it Friday. I needed a megazoom camera and I mean, you can't beat a Leica lens. Look at the DCRP review at the sample shots...UNREAL! I snagged mine for $414 AC w/ free shipping from Buy.com, but I think they're outta stock now. The FZ20 has been out quite some time, and should soon be replaced w/ the FZ30, so you may want to either be paitent or check out the FZ5 as I did. The only diffs. are it's lacking manual focus & a hot shoe, but it's got faster focus (which is way important, to me) and it's cheaper/smaller. Anywho, to the OP, get the SD500, it's amazing!

You won't be unhappy w/ the Canon, assuming it's even close to the s500 I have. Here's a pic of some random junk in my house to try out the colour. It's a 2.2meg file mind you. :)

Fuji FinePix F10 actually pwnz every consumer digicam in its class.

Take a ISO400 image with the F10, and compare it to an ISO400 image of any other consumer digicam. There is no comparison.

Add the fact that the Fuji can take good ISO800 images, and decent ISO1600 images, and you can see why other cameras don't stack up.

The Fuji doesn't appease everyone though. It's a good P&S camera, but it's not a super-zoom, nor is it a super-slim. Battery life is excellent though; between 300-500 shots on the included rechargeable.

Resolution is also excellent; it outresolves all 5MP cameras (not too hard because it uses a 6MP sensor) and nearly all 7MP cameras.
