What compels American aid workers like Kayla Mueller to go to the Middle East?

A lot of these people think they will be safe; used to be an understanding that you do not mess with aid workers and people like that, even in the worst areas. That's all gone away now, but not everyone seems to have gotten the memo so they fly off to help and end up in trouble.

Stupidity.
:awe:

She went there to support HAMAS...to march with them against Israel.Throw rocks with them against Israel.
ended up sold into slavery..
I think all libruls should go over there and do that 😉
Go empathize with the innocent HAMAS Palestinians.

You're an idiot.

Sometimes humans help each other despite the danger.

:\

Hint: look up the word "empathy".

It might help you understand humanity a little better.

Empathy and the typical young-adult mindset that they are invincible. Bad things couldn't happen to them.

I believe they're exceptionally naïve and going to a place like that is very, very selfish to do towards your own family and friends.

They see people in Need and go to fulfill it. Whether they should or not is their choice to make.

That's right, it is, but if you're captured, don't expect others to sacrifice their own lives to rescue you.

I believe Altruism is the human virtue those people have. The desire to help others without regard for your own well being

I believe her BF was from there and they had traveled there to help, unlike most people, there are some folks willing to risk their lives to help others. Nothing naive or ignorant.

It's kind of how a child doesn't understand that the hot stove can hurt them without first burning themselves on said stove.

Except in this case, the stove is a member of ISIS/a bullet.

They can't possibly think this is a safe time to go to a place like Syria?

What makes you think they are unaware of the danger? Just because you are too afraid to risk your life to help others doesn't mean others are wrong for doing so.

Keith is right. It's kind of like if someone were to play russian roulette. Just because you're a coward doesn't mean someone else won't do it.

wouldnt surprise me if she got a calling from god.
thank goodness i havent given my cell # out to people i dont know.

Because they are crazy.

There should be a disclaimer for these people to sign when they go. When you get caught, we don't make any effort to bail you out. When someone goes out drinking and driving, they are well-informed of the consequences of their actions. This should be no different.

I don't give a fuck about morons that go to third world war zones "trying to make a difference." How about making a difference in the US? Or of one of our allies? No? Then get fucked.

There are people who see things they think are wrong with the world and then go out and try to do something, accepting the risks that go along with it.
Some people do things like join the military if they think killing folks is the answer. Some people join private organizations if they think other solutions (non pew pew stuff). Some folks split the difference and join mercenary type orgs.

I know quite a few people who put their lives on the line to try and "Do something" overseas. Every single one of them knows what they are in for and accepts the risks.
Whether it heading to some shithole in Africa or South America to build schools and teach modern techniques or heading over to some warzone to help with local trauma centers or even someone who signs up with the Marines because they want be the instrument that keeps bad people in check....

The rest hang out on the internet and either click "like" on Facebook or bitch about it to someone who is only waiting for their turn to speak.

O.K. Why don't you explain to the forum what the hell you were implying?

I am implying exactly what I said - she was probably naive and it was a selfish thing to do with regards to her family. Now, can you point out where I blame her for her own death? No, of course you can't.
