What companies have gone above and beyond without being pushed?

I've been impressed by two companies in my time for going above and beyond without being pushed. I like to give credit where credit is due. So many companies go out of their way to pinch pennies and not stand behind their products so when companies stand proud its quite refreshing. The first was Nikon who fixed a 5 year old camera that was well out of warranty that broke due to a known problem with the model. This was years ago and I try to buy Nikon whenever possible, most recently I bought my wife an entry level DSLR from them.

My most recent positive experience was with Oakley. About 4 years ago I bought a pair of polarized Fives off ebay for roughly $85 from a reputable seller albeit not an authorized seller. The pair I bought was sold without a box, simply the bag. I was never 100% sure they were legit but thought they were due to the seller rating. After 4 years of very light use the upper corners of the lenses near the bridge started getting what appeared to be a build up but wouldn't clean off. I sent them some pictures to see if they had any advice on how to remove it, at the time I was a bit disappointed a lightly used set of premium sunglasses were giving me issues. The CS rep replied asking me to contact their warranty dept. At first I was a bit frustrated because all I was looking for was advice not the runaround on a pair of glasses I knew weren't under warranty. I did as they asked and contacted them and was up front on how old they were and where I bought them from. Without hesitation or prodding they opened a claim on a 4 year old pair of sunglasses bought from Ebay, their standard warranty is 1 year. After filling out a short form and supplying some pictures to confirm the issue they sent me a pre-paid return label. I sent them back and waited for their warranty dept to process. They determined the lenses were delaminating however they didn't have replacement polarized lenses anymore. So they gave me a $135 credit (far more than my original purchase price) to use on their site for a new pair. I just ordered my replacement, a pair of Hijinx with polarized lenses, total cost was $15 (glasses were $150) and they picked up the shipping. I'm pretty shocked to say the least.

Logitech has always given me shockingly good service. No hassles whatsoever on warranty claims. I've also gotten great service from small niche companies, but good service is more expected from them than the big guys.

interesting re: oakley, because they've come down a long way from their glory days

Patagonia is the first one that comes to mind, not due to customer service but their willingness to sacrifice profits for the sake of standing by their principals and doing good for the environment.

revzilla is the bomb. anthony is my homeboy (and by that i mean we went to the same school 7 years apart). i also met him in the philly store 🙂

I can think of a few, Fisher Price, 2 Step baby products. American Express, I called them about a dishwasher that started not cleaning well right after the warranty expired and they refunded the full amount of the dishwasher I thought they would have it fixed.

+1 for Logitech making things super easy. I don't remember if I called or emailed them about one of the wheel buttons on my G500 failing, but they just asked for a couple pieces of info and sent me a new one.

Marineland (aquarium stuff) treated me very well when I still had fish tanks. Currently I only have a small 5 gallon one at work.

Brother. I bought a Brother printer on a super hot deal ($3.00 after rebates/ coupons /etc). I didn't use it for 3 years, as it sat unopened under my bed. When I tried to use it, the ink had dried in the lines so bad that I could not get it to work at all. I wrote Brother and they called me back within a day. After listening to my problem and the fact that I hadn't opened the printer, the lady asked for my address. They sent me a new(er) model for FREE and told me to recycle the old one, even though the warranty had run out 2 years earlier.

Couldn't believe it.

XFX. A few years ago we upgraded the TV and I wanted to feed Hi-Def video to it from our media PC with one of their cards. It has a DVI port but not HDMI, which was the TV's way. I got a simple adapter to convert DVI to HDMI and connected up, but still no sound getting to the TV via HDMI. I called XFX to be sure their vid card (based on a ATI chip) has audio output on the DVI port, and it does. The alerted me that some adapters don't connect the audio signals (audio is not actually part of the "standard" DVI output), and you have to buy the right one. OK, now I knew what to do. Then the rep said they'd mail me one free, which they did. Of course it solved the problem completely. They didn't have to - I could have bought one - but they made a very happy customer for a small cost.
