Hey guys and gals.

Since I no longer working at this auto & body shop as an apprentice, I can't get good deals on getting my car painted.

I also will be starting school this fall. So i'm right now poor as heck.

To short things up, My project car is needing a paintjob. I have gave up on the idea of buying a fairly new used car. I've decided to just have Maaco paint it with their "Embassador" $250 paintjob.

I know that it's not going to come out good (you get what you pay for right?). But i know that it's going to be better than what i have now, especially with all the spots of the primer.

I'm doing all of the prep work myself and just going to let them spray it. what you think?

what color should i paint it?

I'd save the $$$, or spend it on school stuff like books (since you mentioned you're starting school).

But uh, just not yellow!

did you get fired from your old place ?

why not ask if you can do the painting yourself, and do several coats.

I would rather drive it like that for a bit and save the money for a good paint job rather than do it at Maaco.

and what the hell is a supra doing with maxima wheels :p

at LEAST step up from the $250 job to the next thing they offer, like $500...

$250 all i can picture is they drive your car into the bay and run around wildly spraying a quarter gallon of paint and there done

:) the wheels fit the car perfectly. it's a match made in heaven...or detroit. I don't know :)

don't you think they match each other?

I already budget out the money for books.

I just don't want to be driving around much longer with the car looking like a gateway pc cow.

If you are going to have Maaco do it...I would not do a color change. It will bleed through and look like crap. Stick with the OEM color.

Don't let Maaco touch it. It looks better with primer spots than it would with a Maaco paint job. You can spot an Embassador job from a mile away, looks like somebody went wild with a couple cans of Krylon.

From what I have seen the el cheapo jobs where you do all the prep consist of:

1. Tape windows
2. cover tires
3. spray

One coat of paint, no glosscoat. It seriously looks like semi-gloss interior paint.

well you can't expect much for $250. what's the upgraded $500?

i don't think there's much of a difference since they're both doesn't include a clear coat

They probaly do the door jams, inside of the trunk, inside of the fenders, underside of hood & possibly the sides of the engine bay for the $500 one. If you are going to sand & prime it yourself go to a regular paint shop and see what kind of a quote they give you for spraying it.

I can't say that all maaco's are the same and nobody has ever been happy with a paint job from them, I know that isn't true. I guess it all depends on how picky you are.

I'm not that picky especially for $250 paintjob. I guess i'm going to keep the original White, a lot of people voted white.

I wish there's a site where you can take a look of $250 paint job from Maaco.

Oh and remember. 95% prep. 5% paint. If you want it to look good, you do a good prep. Multiple coats of filling primer, each one 900 grit wetsanded. Once you think its good, fog an epoxy black primer over it, all the low spots will become dark. FIll it in with more primer. Sand.Prime.Sand. Prime one last time, 1000 grit wetsand now. Paint of choice, (acrylic enamel for me). let dry. Wetsand 1200 grit till the glossy "orangepeel" comes off. Shoot clearcoat. Wetsand 1200. Shoot clear. Should be looking pretty darn good.

In Orlando there is a franchise paint shop called Econo.
They are actually very good.
They have a $300 paint job which is a 3yr warranty integrated paint.
They sometimes have it on sale for $250. With this paint job, pay another $100 for an extra clear coat after they apply the paint and it looks very very good.

I had one of my car pianted there before and it looks very good considering I paid $329 total for it.
I don't have that car anymore but heres what the paint with the extra clear coat would look like.
The hood is the one painted
