I suck at this and my chick friend's out of town! I need to pick up a bed frame, desk, and dresser tonight - I want the place to look cool, contemporary, and "nice" so I want everything to be coordinated (i'm 24 not 17 so I don't need it to look techie) - what color furniture should I get? the oak is slightly darker than most - between oak and cherry, actually. What do you guys recommend?

Thanks!

White furniture. With red or brown fabric if possible. It'll look great.

someone stained your hardwood floors dark? That's pretty hard to believe. I'd put off buying furniture for a few weeks until you get the floors resurfaced to remove the dirt, makes everything brighter, then get furniture.

or, if you're renting or just don't care, get something with a good contrast (i like dark furniture) and make sure you apply felt pads to anything that might touch the floor.

for a contemporary look, go with simple sleek lines and either white OR black. both will look modern. stick with simple fabric patterns (if any) and try a monochromatic color scheme, but dont be afraid to use bright color

Just pick whatever furniture you like, then get a rug to tie it together.

Excellent! Thanks. I think I'm going with white, black might get depressing (though it'll look nice).

They're a light cream/peach almost. I'm so excited about the place - it's a gorgeous duplex with high ceilings and soo much more light than I'm used to!

Bold? should I try for lime green? You think I'm kidding? I'm not!

As long as the fabric isn't white, which would be a pain to keep clean.

White!? You've got the balls to go with white?

Better not let anybody over, or have any parties, or sit on them...

I'd go with red for oak floors. Very warm.

why do you have to purchase the furniture tonight? why not head to Borders, look at a few books on contemporary interior design? I think you will fvck it up if you buy stuff tonight. :)

um, white furniture, pretty difficult to pull off if you are an interior design noob, imo..

Oak goes well with pastels too if you want some color.

We're getting cherry floors in our new house. Colors are a bit limited with dark wood like that :(
