what codec to use for playing a video in leopard?

So I need to author some videos that will be played on macs with the leopard OS, what codec should I use, I was thinking of xvid but I don't know if the macs will play it without installing extra software, any suggestions?

QuickTime (.mov) is just a container format. I haven't been paying much attention to codecs, but I'd go with H.264 since all Macs nowadays have QuickTime 7.

Hmmm yeah, I hadn't considered h264, guess I'm a bit behind the times, will it work with an avi container?

h264 can be put into the MKV container, but OS X cannot use this by default. So, the best way to do it would be h264 in an mp4 container
