What codec to play avi and divx movies on Win2000?

I currently have Media player 6.4 and I'm running Windows 2000. I did have version 7, but uninstalled it because the codecs I tried didn't work on that version either. So far, I've tried AngelPotion and Divx 3.11alpha. Neither of them worked for me. I assume it's because they're not compatible with 2000. I remember AngelPotion working when I was still running 98, but that was a while back. Where can I get the plug-in or codec to play these movies on my computer?

I use Divx 3.11alpha and it works fine under win2K.

Are you sure you have a regular DivX file ? Check http://www.google.com for a plugin called 'SMR'. It's not that widely spread tho'.

And Divx 3.11alpha works fine for me too in Win2K...

The files' extension says avi, so I don't know what's up. It's possible that media player itself is corrupted, though it seems to be playing other things just fine.
