What codec do you need to play .avi files in Windows media player 7?

I think you may be trying to run DivX encoded video, and you don't have the plug in so all you get is video. Try downloading the DivX plugin and see if it works:

WMP Version 7 won't support Divx so you'll need a standalone player to play it though.

I can play a divx on Mp7, but i prefer to play it on the Creative playcenter or the Xing player.

This is a separate player that will play DivX movies. It's pretty cool. Looks like PowerDVD.
Micro DVD Player.
Just go to download section, it is a 2088 kB file.
