I remember an educational game from the early 90s.
You had a race car and you had to solve puzzles to upgrade it. You could get ball bearing tires and such. Upgrade the body from wood to graphite etc.
I think part of the game involved climbing through buildings using ladders and such and avoiding traps, similar to the original Donkey Kong.
Possibly widget workshop, but looking at screenshots I don't think that's it.
