What cheap handgun would you recommend?

My wife has been wanting a handgun, I'm thinking maybe some sort of .22 but I honestly do not know enough about guns to make a good decision.

If it is a .22 you are looking for, go with a ruger or a browning buckmark. I prefer the buckmarks myself (better factory trigger, easier to exchange barrels), but both are excellent and will serve you well, and some models can be had for cheap.

I have had walther p22's in the past, and a Sig Mosquito, and both shoot well, but are ammo finicky. The Sig mosquito I can pretty much only shoot CCI mini-mag ammo in it, and the trigger is horrendous. Both were accurate though.

I want something that will be easy for her to shoot and not heavy

Well, the P22 would be light and easy to shoot as far as .22's go. Just remember that if you get one, and you have jamming/feeding issues - try different ammo before blaming the gun. Some ammo they like, and some they dont.

One like this - http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=157066006

A buckmark like this will be small and light to carry, and just as easy to shoot as well -

Well it doesn't have to be a .22, I am open to suggestions. Like I said, I don't know very much about guns.

If you're just shooting for recreation, I recommend the Buckmark. I have several handguns, and I shoot that one the most by far. If you're looking for self defense, you'll need something bigger. In any case, try going to a gun range that rents, and try anything that strikes you. I wouldn't buy anything until you've shot it.

agree with slim's pick.. i have one for ultra concealed carry.. here is black one..

if you want a bigger handgun with lifetime warranty.. everyone laughs at hi points but they are fine just feel like a bag of bricks they are so heavy.. (they work flawless as well put 40,000 rounds? through one of the .45's and worked perfect every time..) i use it for my spare tire gun in my 3rd car

they really cant be beat on price (where can you find a gun less than 200 that wasnt used ina murder?)

http://www.impactguns.com/store/hipoint.html

sometimes you can find heavily used glocks or XD for about 350 but..

also p22 are very cool i have 2 of them and they are picky on the ammo they use but ive put over 100,000 rounds threw one of them and it still works perfect..

38 special? Revolver, no muss, just pull the trigger. Smaller 357 revolver? Weight won't be a problem either.

Fun and protection, and I suppose I should have been more specific, under 500 if possible

Couple 100 max

Is it for target shooting, or actual defensive use?

Target shooting, I agree with the .22 recommendations above. Cheaper guns, cheap ammo, better target shooting weapon.

If it's for defensive use, the Taurus Millenium Pro in whatever the biggest caliber is that she can handle. It's a smaller frame weapon that most females or smaller handed males find extremely comfortable to shoot. It's hella accurate, totally reliable (at least the newer models), and if you shop around you should get it for about $315 (barring the current firearm shortage issues).

Here's my wife's favorite guns.

S&W 686 - she shoots 38+P out of it and loves it.
Ruger LCP - This is her daily carry.
Springfield XD 9mm - She love shooting this as well.
Ruger LCR - she tried a friend's and she loves it.
AR-15 and AK-47 - She just burns though ammo

Things she was not a fan of
all the .45's she's tried.
.308 bolt action rifles
My Walther PPS - said it moved too much in her hand.

I wouldn't recommend a cheap handgun. Cheapest I'd go is low $300's for a .38 from Taurus.

Hipoints are sub 200 and work. I spent 250 on my bersa 380 and carry it everyday. After the bersa stuff jumps to like 350 to 450 for a compact unless it's used. But don't go cheap, get a nice s&w m&p....

Shopping used might be the way to go. I got both of my sigs for $500 "used" but you would have a tough time finding any wear.

Yeah I just bought a surplus police glock that there is nothing wrong with, just some holster wear. Check out gunbroker.com. They have good deals on newused guns.
