With Time Warner in NYC?

My analog tuners only pick up a little over 30 stations, (mostly broadcast & public access) which I think are supposed to be going away as even those will be moved to digital soon.

Between the DVR rental costs, the charge for service in each room, & the remote rental costs, it is almost $25/month for each additional room. I would like to use my own box instead for that if possible.

I was thinking of getting a ClearQAM tuner to use windows media center again like I did with RCN, but what stations will that get? Searching around on the net I see complaints that the HD versions of most of the basic cable stations are encrypted but what about the SD versions of channels like Sci-Fi & Discovery? Can these be tuned without using the cable box or a cable card?

How can I tell which of the channels that come back in the list from that are from Time Warner?
Some are clearly not from the screenshots, like it gets some RCN video on demand channels.

The cable companies are, by FCC rules, required to carry anything that gets broadcast OTA in your area in an unencrypted form. These are the only channels you can count on receiving with a clear QAM tuner. You may get a few extra as a bonus, but those could go away at any time.
