What cell phone?

I got a Kyocera Rave phone when I got my plan in August '04, and although it works just fine this whole time, my friend who's on my plan too just got a new Kyocera flip phone for just $30. This whole time I couldn't find a reason to spend $100 on a phone just to have a flip phone, when my Kyocera Rave has good battery life, excellent reception, clean and good interface (love the Kyocera interface)... well most of all it just plain works. But I would like a flip phone still... and when I saw my friends pretty sweet one he got for just $30, I was like holy fvck I want.

So I went down to Alltel to check the phones out and was pretty disappointed at the selection. Not considering any of the retarded PDA/blackberry-type phones, what one would you guys recommend?

I don't care about: camera/video recording, Axcess garbage, picture messaging, voice activated dialing or anything like that.

But just about every phone comes with it anyway. So what I'm most concerned with is signal/voice quality (I'd assume they'd be all the same, but who knows), reliability, and interface. It seems the Motorola phones I've seen before had a POS garbage interface. I want something simple and clean like Kyocera ones. LG seems to be decent interface too. So that kinda puts me off from the Razr. Also why the hell can't any phones come with games? My friends phones from years ago had decent blackjack. No way do I want to pay Axcess charges for their crappy games and software... can't they just give you ONE friggin' game installed on the phone??

The Kyocera slider phone on that page looks sweet, and even more so I seen it is an mp3 player as well as bluetooth and USB compatible. But it seems its some sort of Transflash media, so I don't think I'd want an mp3 player phone unless it could take SD cards or something similar. Plus although slider phones are as tight as flip phones IMO, I worry a little bit about the screen not being protected.

So, my limited selection comes down to one of the Kyocera, Motorola, LG, or Audiovox that's listed on that page. What ones do you guys like?

That is providing I can get the 2yr rate, which they told me at Alltel I couldn't but clearly the rep was a moron considering my friend got the Kyocera Candid for $30 which was the 2yr plan price, yet he is in the exact same situation as me with a line added to someone else's 1yr plan. And that was just one week at the SAME location where I went to today. But that's another story.. if I can get a good price I wanna get opinions on the phones available. Do I have any other way of acquiring a sweet for for $60 or so outside of ALltel (i.e. buy my phone somewhere else and bring it there to have them set-up, though it seems retail is $250+ on most plus I might get hit with activation fees)

See my post on HowardForums. Their phone selection absolutely sucks. Seems the best phone for sound/reception is the RAZR V3c, which is way better than GSM RAZRs on other networks. Different phone apparently.

My dad has the Kyocera Slider and I don't really like it. Akward to use, camera is worthless.

If you can find a Verizon phone you like, you can use it no problem, just without the "fancy" features like web browsing and stuff.

Alltel
RAZR V3c, Moto E815 if they have it

And any phones you buy elsewhere have to be Alltel phones. Can't just buy an unlocked phone or anything, Alltel is CDMA, all those other phones are GSM.

Negative, Sprint and Verizon are both CDMA. Verizon phones are unlocked, just call and add the IMEI to the account and it'll work.

Sprint has something else going on with their phones...no real way to get them to work without a lot of trouble.

The E815 will be out in early May

Thanks for the helpful replies!!

So the Razr is actually a good phone... what about its interface and reliability compared to similarly priced phones?

I checked out Verizon phones and their selection is definitely better, but I don't think there's any way I could get the 2yr price on them. And this whole thing is counting on me getting the 2yr price from Alltel, but if my roommate did I don't see why the hell I can't!!

Can the Moto V3c be unlocked or cracked so I could actually make use of the usb port? Seems kinda pointless to have one unless I could transfer mp3 ringtones, mp3s, games, or even my own software since I notice it supports Java. But it seems from comments that its pretty limited and you basically gotta buy all your crap from the mobile service for $$$.

I think I'm pretty much stuck to trying for an Alltel phone with the 2yr plan. My roommate said he'd go in there with me if I decide on one to tell them I better get the same kinda price structure if he did. The Razr V3c is $200-250 on Ebay....!!! I wanna keep it under $100 or even up to $130ish.
