What cell phone band does India use?

So my dad's going to india tomorrow and I'm wondering if a US cell phone will work there, we've got a sony/ericsson T616 GSM 800 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900, and a nokia 8290 GSM 1900 and 3390 GSM 1900.

I'm not sure but I think india is GSM 800/1900 does anyone know for sure? My dad's hoping he can bring a phone there and buy a pre-paid sim card.

Update:

I found a website that says you need Functionality on 900/1800/1900 frequencies, will we need all 3 bands? or will on of the 3 work?

GSM will work fine, if you have a tri-band phone (and I believe most are anyway) you should be fine. My dad takes his Sony Ericson phone to India and it works with their pre-paid card. Just make sure the phone you have is not locked by your service provider. By locked, I mean the phone will only work wiht hte service provider that you got it from. It won't work wiht any other SIM cards.

Also, any phone you buy there will also work in the US/Canada provided your service provider uses a SIM card.

sounds good, the t616 and nokia 8290 are both unlocked. I sort of want to send him off with the nokia 8290 since it's a easier phone to use compaired to the t616. My dad gets easily confused with this stuff, he doesn't normally use a cell phone

oh ok. My dad travels often to that part of the world and I know that his phone works in India, Thailand, China, etc.. without any problems. You should get him to buy a phone from there, it might end up being cheaper and you'd get a much nicer phone than what you'll find in the US/Canada.

I think I'm going send him off with the T616 because it say's it's a world phone so I think it should be ok

I'm just getting a headache trying to explain the menus and joystick to him, my dad is very technology ignorant

i'm in india right now, using the t610 which is almost identical to the t616. coverage and reception are excellent so you should have no problem 🙂
