I wanted to buy a CRRW and I have narrowed it down to two choices!
The SONY CRX140E or Hp CD-WRITER 9140I. I am open to suggestions.
Which one is better? Both are 8x4x32 But the Sony is cheaper!
If you know any other good CDRW's (under 200$) let me know !

Check out the hot deals forum--they often list good prices on cdrw drives. There was a message posted about a $99 yamaha at staples b&m. you may want to check it out.

Yamaha CRW8824EZ :)

Cost me $295 canadian. That's about $200 US, 8x8x24.
Oh yeah, and that $300 was at CompuSmart, it's just a big computer retail chain...I don't know if they have them in the states or if it's just canada, but you could probably do quite a bit better than that price if you buy online or whatnot.

Of they two though I'd probably choose the sony.

I didn't realize you could get the plextor that cheap. It is the best drive out there.

I still say check out the yamaha. Like I said, it cost me just under $200US, and I'm sure you could find it cheaper, it was a spontaneous purchase, so I didn't look for a good price.

If price is that big of a deal to you, get the Sony, the Sony and HP are pretty comprable.

Buy.com does charge tax for people in CA, I know cause I've been charged for it.. and Plextor is the best IMO.

Sorry, just staing my opinion. I'd go with the Yamaha then, but you could get a Plextor 8/4/32 from Buy.com for around your price range with a coupon..

Hey newbie! Did you check out that damn Hot Deals Link that eyor mentioned?

Don't sit there with your thumb up your butt, get it over to Staples ASAP. Hot Deals don't last long. Usually not even a half day. If you're lucky, there may be something left there tomorrow.

eyor did the legwork for you this time by pointing you toward Hot Deals. Me thinks you already blew it. I snagged the last Yamaha CRW8424EZ at our local Staples for $99.00. Hell, I don't need it in any way! But I can return the stupid thing if I can't find a home for it. Oh well, you'll learn...

Get on the phone and call around.. It would be worth a drive to save $75 bucks or so, no? You can return it to your local store if it doesn't work.

Just find a store that has one and tell them to hold it. Beg if you have to. You gotta put in a little effort for a deal like that. Obviously if money weren't an issue, you'd have ordered the Plextor by now.

Atomicpower!

My, you like those exclamation marks!

Look, they all work. But, like all requests for hardware opinions, it depends on what exactly you want to do with the friggin' thing. e.g. CloneCD (Disk-At-Once) will not work with Yamaha burners. Beyond that, short of no-name brands, choose the one that looks best in your case:)

BTW, is money an issue or not?

Regards,
Craig

It's not ! I just don't want to spend more than $180 (If you call that an issue fine) because I won't be using it that often and a 12x10x32 is just not worth buying (for myself). But thanks for the tips. I haven't heard you talking about HP drives are they good? bad? average?
BTW no name brands! I had a 24x Teac Cdrom (on my old computer) it was pretty quiet and fast! And than after 2 years it broke down bummer! And i installed another Cyberdrive 24x Cdrom oh boy where should i start ? It's lound it's about 25% slower and the quality i won't even start on that!

If you can really get a Plextor 8x4x32 for decently cheap you might want to go with that.

Plextors are undoubtably the best CDRWs. I've always found them to be too expensive.

Personally I use alot of CDRWs, so I like the 8 rewrite on the Yamaha, if you don't think you'll use CDRWs much, then an 8x4 is just as good, and the Plextor is a better quality drive.

Sony, HP, and Ricoh are all about even in my experience, all quite good, but they aren't as good as Yamaha, which aren't as good as plextor. I've also heard that Teac are suppose to be quite good, but I've never used them.

OK, you are an excellent fence-sitter. As a Canadian, I can empathize. Isn't a free market economy just a kick in the teeth? So much choice; too few brain cells to make the choice with.

You ask about the different brands. All have been known to burn CDs when requested. For more detailed information than that, try CD Media World. Been a while since I went shopping for one, and their info now seems a bit outdated, but they likely still list those burners you are interested in.

My personal take? If you aren't typically burning an entire CD (i.e. software distribution), then the top speed isn't that important. Then you get an older Plextor that fits you budget. If you want the fastest possible, get the Sony, Ricoh, HP, Yamaha or whatever. I suppose you could compare buffer sizes, but they rarely come into play. If it helps, roll a die.

Stay away from HP at all costs... I've had nothing but trouble with their drives.

Plextor isn't all that expensive considering the quality and efficiency it has. I have a Plexwriter 8432... never failed on a burn on me (200+ cds burnt so far...).

I believe HP has the audacity to have their prices around Plextors... which is pretty darn stupid IMO.
