i need a new one. im thinking of getting the sony CRX195E1 which is 40x12x48 or the lite-on LTR-48126S 48x12x48. These things are rolling out so fast it's hard to find reviews for specific models. Which company generally has the most problems? best compatiability?

Yea, I'd get the Lite on 40x drive and upgrade it with the 48x firmware. mine works great happy to burn at 48x now! 🙂

Is it worth bothering to tell you to get a Lite-On? Probably not, so I'll give you advice on a particular drive. Go to this page at Newegg.com and look at three of these drives:

If you do a lot of rewriting (I have yet to make one rewritable CD, and I've had a rewritable drive since 1999), then get either the LTR-4824S OEM for $56.99, or the LTR-48246S Retail for $60.99. $4 for a full version of Nero? More than worth it in my eyes, but if you don't like Nero (i.e. you're insane), then go ahead and get the OEM version.

If you do not do a lot of rewriting (why do I even mention this? does anyone ever use rewritable CDs?), then get the LTR-48126S Retail for $57.99 (AND YOU GET A FREE T-SHIRT.... who cares?). Paying the extra money for a 52x drive will only take around 10 or 15 seconds off of an already ridiculously fast burn time, so it's completely not worth it. Another thing to note, I'm suggesting the S version over the W version, though they perform exactly the same. Lite-On changed from one manufacturer to another for the actual laser, but I'm sure it was just a cost thing rather than a quality thing. Either way, I'd suggest the S just because it is the most current. Plus, there are no issues yet with the S version, as they have no firmware updates yet. So unless you're all about flashing your firmware, save yourself the trouble and just get the S.

Now please go out and get this thing and let us know so that no one else has to tell you what you already know!

LITE-ON RULES!

i always had a plextor, fast and reliable, but when i got my 40x12x48 liteon for a 1/3 of the price i couldn't of been happier. Add my vote for the Lite-on

Oh, sorry, I didn't read your entire original post. I can tell you that when the Lite-On is put up against any other drive, it is usually the winner. Listen to what this review says from CDR Info.com:

"[The] LiteOn LTR-40125S is definitely the winner at this roundup. The drive is the faster in both reading/writing tests than both ASUS and Plextor drives are."

If you're not sure how reputable that source is, just look at that link to the review. It's mind-boggling how much analysis they put into their reviews. Unfortunately, they don't have a review of the Sony drive you were looking at, but they did have a review of the Sony CRX 210E1 and the Sony CRX 220E1. Don't bother reading them anyway, just get a Lite-On. And if you're still not convinced, here are a few Lite-On reviews:

LTR-48246S
LTR-52246
LTR-48125W
LTR-48246S
LTR-40125S
LTR-48125W
LTR-40125S
Doesn't specify whether it's the 32123S or the 32125W, but they really loved this product and it's a great mag.
LTR-48246S
LTR-40125S
LTR-32123S
LTR-40125S
Lite-On LTR-40125S vs. Plextor PX-W4012TA/SW (notice how the Lite-On trounces the Plextor)

That should give you ample reading.

Do not get a Sony burner. My old roomate's Sony cdrw burned so many coasters. I'd say it was almost 1 out of 3. My roomate was not pleased.

Get the Lite-On.

wow. Mandrake 9 cd1, 695 mb. 2 minutes, 38 seconds. Thats what im talking about. i love it. it is quite loud but the speed makes up for it and the price was right.

thanks all,
jonah

Get the SONY!!!!! Don't get me wrong, I'm a happy LiteOn owner of 2 years, my little 12x cdrw has never given me any problems, except run on PIO mode for a few stubborn occasions, but thats it.

Buy my next CDRW purchase will be a Sony equivalent. Why? The NOISE!! The Sony drives put out less noise than the loud LiteOns. I'm getting tired of hearing my optical drives whine when trying to do a simple task. And is especially annoying when watching a movie. Nothing worse than having to turn up the volume to drown out the noise.

The Sony equivalent has slightly slower DAE speeds but MUCH more higher CDRW reads speeds compared to the LiteOn. Plus the Sony quieter than the LiteOn.

Kinda late as he ordered the Liteon but... My liteon is quiet, I beleive my HD's are louder. subjective really...
