What were the problems, the brand , and the drive? I am just curious.

What would you never buy again?

Thanks in advance!

I've never had a problem with any media. CMC Magnetics, Ritek, Taiyo Yuden, Kodak Gold, TDK, and Kingston. It could be the fact that I still use a 2x burner and it's almost imossible to get a bad burn. But I still use the 'good' ones to store my important stuff because other people say that the cheapy ones are lacking in longevity.

I don't like the Compusa Bulk 12x disks they have. They burn ok, but have not top protective layer. This means the scratch and chip very easily. I would avoid those in the future.

Those GQ (Great Quality) CD-Rs that Fry's sells in 50-packs (usually around $7-$10) suck big time! They work OK but they don't read as fast as other cheap brands. Sometimes they stall during reading and lock my system! I don't think I would trust these CDs even just for music. I don't like their CD-RWs either...and it's been hit-and-miss even with thier gold CDs. I've even seen some with physical defects such as holes through the reflective layer. I guess you do get what you pay for though...

BUT I also have a spindle of unmarked CD-Rs. I thikn they're Hotan discs but I lost the paper thing from inside the cake box. They're also pretty cheap (sometimes $10 for a spindle of 50) but I've NEVER had any problems with them. I always check my data discs after I've made them and these ones read fast and smooth all the way to the end.

Kodak Gold discs are pretty nice. I'd use them more if my name was Daddy Warbucks ;)

I still have a spindle of TDK 80-min discs and some Yamaha 10x CD-RW dics that I have to try out.

The drives I use are the Memorex 2x2x16 and the TDK (Plextor version) 12x10x32.

You're lucky I'm too lazy to throw some of those GQs in the mail. I never had good results at 2x with them either ;)

Imation CDR's don't play too well in my car CD player. Most green-dye cheap CD's don't play either. I've actually had my best luck with some old Hi-Val CDR's but the company has since gone out of business :(

The church were I go uses Maxell CD-Rs to record our radio broadcast and take it to the radio station...it works fine, but occasionally we get a clicking noise in the recording...and it's not the wav file we burn from, either. Could it be that the sometimes the other technician burns the CD with the stick-on label already attached?
Anyway, I personally have used Memorex CD-Rs, and they seem to work ok.

Prime Peripherals 700MB disks are great! I've burned about 30 so far with 0 failures from my Yamaha 4416s. They had a great deal on these disks at Costco a while back... 200 disks for $40 with a $40 rebate = FREE!

From best to worst, in my experience:

HP (Taiyo Yuden)
Yamaha
Ricoh Platinum
Kingston H
Imation
PNY

PNY burned OK, but had slow spinup time/transfer rate and music tracks that were burned at the outer edge of the CD were susceptible to skipping.

Generic "DISC" brand media. out of a box of 100, 20 had a small crack near the spindle but were still usable, and 25 were way too light and wouldn't work in any circumstance.

I've had good luck with Kodak and Memorex (iirc)

I have used nothing but generic disks and have burned about three thousand in the last two years with no problems.
Playback problems are caused by tracking problems in the player and lasers not powerful enough to get a good reflection through the dye layer.
If you are burning audio cds you need to go to the true silver media that is out now, as it has no dye whatsoever on the read surface. This media sells for $39.00 per 100 on a spindle generic at www.memorymedia.com

Pacific Digital. Out of 10, only 1 worked; the rest would either not write, or stop accepting data after a few megabytes. Haven't had problems with anything else.

I bought some crap called Gigastorage (non gold) which gave me writing errors. I will never buy them again.

PNY are the biggest POS cdrs I've ever had the non-pleasure of using. I bought a 50 spindle about a year ago and still have around 20 left because I don't use them, except for an audio cd now and then.

Imations - never had a problem, have 90% of my stuff backed up on them.
Fuji (TY) - never had a problem, have quite a bit on them.
TDK (TY) - no problems.
Memorex - had a few probs with them, but have some that work fine after a year...

HP 4x2x32x, now HP 10x4x32x...using EZCD 4-5, CDRwin, CloneCD...

Prime Peripherals, Imation and Memorex (the newer Memorex, not the older type) have all worked fine for me. However, I had a 40% failure rate when I used some cheap Dysan CD-R's. Stay away from those things.

EDIT: Drives: Memorex 1622 (2x2x6) and my ThinkPad CDRW drive (Matsushita 4x4x32).

I've rarely used generics so I can't say which brand really sucked for me. However, the ones I used haven't let me down. I've used tons of Imations, TDKs, Verbatims, Sonys, Memorexs, and Kingston. I have most things on Imations. But I'll probably start using Sony or Verbatim for my crucial stuff.

I bought some compusa generics (100pk no label 8x) and they flaked everywhere. Lost a bunch of music cd's. Burned 1 coaster for every 3 cd's.

Ironically I bought COMPUSA labeled generics (50pk 2x) which actually burn at 12x and never made a coaster unless warranted.

This was on 2 drives, one a generic 2x cd-rw and the other a Iomega 12x10x32. Both media tried on both drives, same result. I'll never buy compusa generics again, period.

Prime Peripheral 700mb suck big time. at least they were free MIR. I could only burn up to 650mb, and even then I get 1 coasters out of 4 burns. I'm getting good stat b/c I've burned 100 of them already, also a big pile of coasters! Wouldn't ever buy them. ;)

B4 you start thinking it's my burner, I have no problems burning FUJIFILM, or Imation 700mb. Drive: Smart&Friendly 2x2x24. slow cooker!
