What causes this laptop LCD problem - washed out colors, very bright

I have an IBM Thinkpad T43 with a display problem. The colors are very washed out (desaturated) and the screen is very bright... blacks look gray and everything else has a white halo. This occurs outside of the OS during the splash screen, so it must be a hardware problem. I've changed out the inverter board with no change.

Is this a screen, video card, or cable problem for those who have experienced this? I want to be certain before I order a replacement part. Thanks in advance.

I have a T42p and after several fan meltdowns and hdd failures (and subsequent repairs) there is a blotch on the lower left which is discolored. I have no answer to this. But I know that when the screen goes black while turned on the blotch disappears almost entirely.
