What causes the hissing sound when you plug an audio device into the AUX port?

My Fit includes an AUX port. When I plug my phone into it to play music I have to:

a. put my phone volume on 100%
b. crank up my stereo volume to 30

And there is always a hiss in the background.

Why?

your phone is a very poor audio source with no power

This is a $400 HTC Touch Pro 2 - I used this on my old Pioneer head unit with no hissing issues. I'd imagine iPods are the same in this regard.

You probably need to turn the phone volume down and the stereo up. Using and AUX port is a bad solution to getting music from one device to another. If your phone volume is at max your music is also at max distortion for the devices output and you are now using this as the input source for another device....which will then amplify the distortion.

The best solution really are the head units that have an iPod connection as this takes the music at a preamp level into the radio like you should.

You might want to consult your manual and configure the appropriate volume input for your aux port, if one is out of balance, you'll hear amplified noise, or the hisssssssss.

Your pioneer unit probably has a higher SR ratio and can amplify low levels easier. You need a mini-amp from your phone to your radio. It may be a $400 phone, but it's not a dedicated music device. It was probably only really designed to power earbuds.

My Infiniti has bluetooth that streams music from the phone to the sound system.

try turning the volume down on the phone and up on the radio. if that's not loud enough, you'll need some sort of amplification between the phone and aux-in, so that you can keep the phone's volume low but still get a good volume out of the unit.

although, my nexus one plays cleanly at full volume into the aux input on my civic. no problems at all.

edit: the ground loop isolator might work, but try it with/without charging first. also try other audio sources and cables to try to isolate the problem.

The hissing you hear is the noise floor in an audio system, usually unhearable because its so low, but once you crank the system volume up it comes through. Sounds like a need an preamp between your phone and the sound system input to at least bring it up to line level voltage.

My hero has almost no hiss in either my Jetta or RX8 (with Aux.)

My friends RX-8 with cassette adapter has hiss with his palm pre though. Dolby B works fine for it -- LOOOOL

I don't know how the fit works, but I would hate to have the car volume all the way up and switch over to something else and go deaf.

My carputer had the same problem and I solved it by wiring in slightly modified cmoy.

You aren't tell us enough. Is 30 the max volume or near max for your head unit or do you mean 30% ?
