What causes hard drive noise?

Just sitting here listening to my new hard drive chunk away...what exactly is causing the noise? It seems like anything rubbing would be bad...

At times mine sounds like a bed of vicious snakes are hissing away, and it stops boot-up.

I just give the case a few good hard slaps to remind it "who" is the boss!! 🙂

It's a Maxtor 250. Brand new. It's making a "normal" noise, I had just never thought about what made the noise.

Hmm which noise the platter spinning type noise,or the clunking noise of it searching,LOL

The normal drive grinding noise. Not the clicking "it's about to die" noise.
