What causes an "This progam has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" error when I use Netscape Communicator?

I had this problem when I was using Netscape Communicator 4.76 so I downloaded version 4.78 and I still get these errors.

Is the problem with Netscape Communicator or my OS (Win 98SE)?

Should I download the stand-alone Netscape Navigator and use that?

My connection to the net is so slow that Internet Explorer takes a really long time to load a page otherwise I might use it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

it's the problem with netscape, not your os

most of the time it's due to:
1. opening multiple windows within short period of time (also applies to popups)
2. loading some java/script and/or flash page that has some errors in it
3. system is low in free resources
4. need to defrag your hard drive

netscape 4.75 is actually the "more stable" version of the browser (which is what i'm using now), not 4.78. i've never used the stand-alone netscape, so i can't really suggest whether it's better or not. maybe you can try and let us know :)

some other people may suggest mozilla. right now it's up to version 0.93 and it's pretty stable. some functionalities is not the same as netscape, but it's ok....

the good thing about the "illegal operation" is that you can simply restart netscape (vs. msie where you have to restart windows). the bad thing is that this illegal operation happens more often than msie

stndn, quick correction -- Mozilla 0.94 just came out. I downloaded it this morning and it seems pretty stable . . .

cuz Netscape Sux

I'm not a big fan of Netscape, but IE isn't exactly immune to this either. I'd have to say IE is probably the one app that crashes on my box more than anything else. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with all the plug-ins like Java/Active-X/media players etc. that're pretty much just patched into it.

mozilla 0.94 is out? dasm.... and i just burned a cd with 0.93 in itlast week .... oh well....
i'll check it out when i get home later

<S> because netscape suks, it perform illegal operation? wow... i guess i learned something new today, huh? </S>
i personally would choose netscape over msie anytime... (i use both equally much)
considering how many vulnerabilities and security holesthat msie have, and the volume of security patches and critical updates, etc, i think netscape is better out of the box than msie

sure, both side have their positives and negatives. but saying one sucks and the other rules just does not solve the problem at all
