What causes a tilt on a display?

On the many of the monitors that I've used, I've noticed that while one corner of the visual display is right in the corner of the monitor. The base of the visual display seems to "tilt" slightly from one side of the monitor to the other.

Is this a common occurance? And what is the likely cause? Jarring the monitor in transport so the electron gun is misaligned?

Geometric Distortion like you describe is almost always a function of the deflection circuitry and the yoke design or alignment at the factory. Electron guns are mounted in such a way that if is "off" there would be massive damage to the plastics and other components due to a server drop, say outside a five story building. Electron guns don't move.

Magnetic interference can also cause distortion or tilted images. Even the earth's magnetic field can cause this phenomenon. For example: Some manufacturers have two different types of the same model depending on where in the world it gets shipped, primarily northern or southern hemisphere.

Good Luck

Most monitors have a tilt control, check your user manual. If the tilt control does not fix the problem odds are you will need to return the unit to the manufacturer.
