What causes a failure to connect?

GasX

Lifer
My router died, so I just got a Netgear WGR614 v6 from Staples and I cannot get it to work properly.

My wired connection works fine.
Unsecured wireless works fine

WEP enabled wireless is fubar

Signal strength is excellent (about 6 feet away) but WinXP's Wireless Network Connection window says there is "Limited or no connectivity"

laptop settings:
SSID: ****

Network Authentication: Open
Data Encryption: WEP
Network Key: ******* (yes, they match)
Key Index (advanced) 1
The Key is provided for me automatically: not checked

Router Settings:
Name(SSID): **** (matches above)
Channel: 11
Mode: g and b

Security Options: WEP
Authentication Type: Automatic
Encryption Strength: 64bit

Passphrase: ******* (matches above)

Any ideas on things I can do to fix this or troubleshoot it further?

WPA seems to have the same problem

edit correction: WPA seems to be working! 😀

edit #2 seems okay on the laptop but intermittent on the desktop - I might have to go wired on the desktop

overwhelmingly the cause is a bad WEP key.

use hex key instead of passphrase.
So, instead of typing in "password" i can type in the HEX key?

Damn, TIVO requires WEP... :|

you can connect your TIVO to a wired ethernet using a USB to Ethernet adaptor. Then the rest of the PC's will be using wireless with WPA security. Currnently this is my home network config, until TIVO will implement WPA (whenever that is 😱)

Except both TIVOs are in different rooms than the router. 🙁

I guess I will have to play with WEP until I get it to work...
