What caused the Civil War?

This is another one of the essay questions for my final. I'm trying to decide between "The Market Revolution" and "The West". But the Market Revolution brought about expansion into the west.... Hmmm. Anyone have any comments on these?

It was states' rights.

I'm sorry - are you referring to the War For Southern Independence?

Whatever you answer, don't say slavery. Despite what people think that *wasn't* the reason.

A general lack of civility, of course.

Different opinions from the states on how the country should be run. Slavery was a big part of it too.

why should we answer your take home history final question? this is a test of your knowledge and understanding, not mine (i did alright in 315L or whatever it was), not zakath's, not gopunk's, millenium's, or anyone else here. though they may attempt to answer for you.

It was slavery. The North was upset that the South got free slave labor. So they were mad because the South cotton field owners were wealthy because they didn't pay for labor. You should do a search. There are some nice articles on the Civil War on the net.

So true.

I could post my opinion on the true reasons of the American Civil War, but that would take too long for me to write.

Good luck with your final.

Combine that with a little bit of States Rights, and ding ding ding....we have a winner

Follow the money.

Northern and Southern economies were built on two different structures. Industry versus Cotton. Presidential election was decided based right down geographical lines. South got tired of North being able able to make policies in it's favor because of more votes, so they decided to make their own country. Lincoln and North didn't like or want that and thought it unconstitutional. Big war, many people die. Slaves freed as a side effect and a battle strategy. It wasn't about the Market Revolution or the west.

Yea your right, I agree with that. The major reason was slavery. But there were a few other factors that eventually led to war. Thank God the North won.

true that... if they hadn't... the commies might have!

Civil war started because the southern states felt that they could rule themselves. They didnt feel that the federal government should have an over ruling say in what they did. For example Virginia felt that Virginia should be ruled BY Virginia....not by somebody in Washington DC.

The Southern states voted to succeed from the union....therefore starting the civil war.

The War of the Northern Aggression was fought because the North told the South how they were going to do things. The South refused, declared States Rights over Federal Rights. North got bitchy, South seceded. North could not handle it because they still needed the South's cheap raw goods manufactered by slavery, so they declared war on the South...

This is what they did not teach in history class.

Slavery was part of the economical reason. They had slaves in the north too. Lincoln freed the slaves to gain votes for the next campaign.

That would be the 3/5's Compromise. The North agreed with the South that a Black man was equal to 1 White man....Pot Kettle black

Depends on what part of the country you live in. I hear that students in the North are taught that Slavery was the main cause. Where as Slavery is but one of many reasons that I learned in school. States Rights was the primary reason. Lincoln did not free the slaves until later in the war.
