What cause my desktop icons to appear lower on my screen each time I startup?

I have Win98SE and when I manually rearrage my desktop icons then I shut down and startup the icons are visibly lower on the screen. They get lower on the screen after each shutdown/startup.

Thanks!

I don't mean to steal your post :D , however I have a somewhat similar problem. After I uninstalled ZoneAlarm (then installed Tiny firewall), my task bar has been out of wack. I had to reboot about 3 times after uninstalling ZA to even get it to be lined up somewhat orderly. Then, the right side - the clock etc - is even with the full botton gray line, but throught out the day, after initially turning the thing on in AM, it sags, and after each reboot throught out the day (yea, I've got 98se), it continues to sag, at the end of the day, the right side of the taskbar and tray can be half gone, to the point that the botton half of the numbers on my clock are gone! It is usually OK the next day after it has been off for the night. I kinda suspect some of the .vxd files that I might have left after uninstalling:eek: I left some and deleted others. (the shared files stuff that I wasn't sure what to do - so I just left some of them)

I'm not entirely sure about the cause, but I think PCMAG.com has a free utility that remembers your desktop and allows you to restore it with a click. Worth a try.

Anyone know what might cause my desktop icons to appear further down on my screen after each bootup?

You say they go lower each time. Are they all lower in exact proportion each time (meaning EVERY icon is exactly lower to a certain extent than previously)? And are you saying that some of them would even disappear if you kept rebooting?

I'd download TweakUI from Microsoft. Install it...then make sure you check "Save Explorer Settings" (Desktop is part of Explorer). Reboot and see what happens.

If it still doesn't work, I'd try deleting your password file(s) (file(s) ends in .pwl) and reboot. You'll be prompted for another username/password. Enter a name, leave password section blank and click OK.
Set up your icons the way you want, and reboot.

Slikkster- is "Save Explorer Settings" part of TweakUI?

90% of the time my icons all move proportionately down the screen after each reboot but a few times some make a big jump from the bottom row of icons to near the top of the screen.

It has been awhile since I let some of the icons completely disappear but if I recall correctly the icons would disappear below the screen then if I resized the screen, to a much much higher resolution, the icons would be visible.

Thanks.

Gravity?

This is a weird one. Have you scanned for viruses?

its called desktop drift, you need to top off your monitor fluid.
;)
if that doens't work, try updating your monitors BIOS
