Question What cards are comparable to a AMD Radeon HD 7870?

Pretty much what it says in the title! I'm looking for a new graphics card for my fiancé but it's been difficult finding cards that are about the same or slightly better because I really don't know where to start. Not experienced at all with this kinda stuff lol! We've been trying to find cards under $400. I've found one that I think might be equivalent if not better (GTX 1050 Ti), but I was wondering if there were others that I'm just having trouble finding.

Right now is a particularly bad time to try to buy a new GPU since there's general product shortages and we're still in a so-called mining boom. What this means is that prices for even entry level GPUs are massively inflated right now.

If you wanted something in the same ballpark that might be obtainable, a 1050 Ti would be a good replacement. They're generally available under $400, but the prices are still ridiculous because all of the other cards are being sucked up by miners leaving lower availability for everyone else, thus higher prices because of limited supply.

If things were normal, I'd get a GTX1650(Super) and be done with it. But since things are the way they are, a 1050ti might well be your only option.

Your other option is to wait and see how things develop over the next half year, but I'd not hold my breath for improvements before next year. Maybe even next summer.

the 1050 2GB is already comparable or better afaik,
so pretty much anything above that should be an upgrade.

7870 should be around the 1050 2GB as mentioned and the Radeon RX560. The GeForce 1650 is around Radeon R9 290 performance, of which the 7870 is about 55% of a R9 290.

If you're open to purchasing used cards, you can find RX 580/570/480/470 4GB cards for ~$200 which will be a decent upgrade over the 7870.

Similarly, GTX 980/970/1060-3GB offer a similar upgrade as well.

As others have said, this is about the worst time in the history of Videocards to try and buy a Videocard so if waiting is an option, it's not a bad option.

Where are you seeing the $200 480/580 4 GBs at? The last time I looked even those were well over $400, closer to $600 for some of the nicer AIB cards.

I have observed RX 460s going for about $110-$150. Honestly I think these are your best, most reliable bet until the market chills out a bit. They are not amazing but they are reasonably efficient and they work.

GTX 950 is another card to pursue that is in the same ballpark performance wise. Usually costs a bit more but I think it is also generally faster. Again, pretty easy on cooling and power consumption as well compared to getting a 7950 or RX 290, etc.

If you've got the PSU and the cooling, the R9 290/290x/390/390x all pack a punch and due to their use in the last mining boom are much more available some other cooler options, like a Fury Nano.

I think another good option might even by a GTX 970, which are actually going for around $100 - $1500 on eBay which makes it a pretty solid choice. A 970 is going to be in the same performance range as an RX 470/570 and seems like a cheaper option since the Polaris cards are probably still being used by miners who can't get anything newer.

I am looking at eBay right now and they are mainly going for $200 after shipping for the last few days.

I mean, every once in a while a GTX 1650 Super gets listed for like $180 too and is gone immediately. It is possible to win the lottery with buy it now listings from people who just want their stuff gone.

Maybe @ $200 the GTX 970 still makes sense too, and maybe if you are patient you could hit $180 or so.
