Okay so I have been looking around at the different cards and reviews. I have a budget, only up to 170. I was looking at the ati 5770 and the gtx 460. They looked like nice cards. I do not know what one I should get. If someone could please tell me what card I should get or if you don't recommended either of these just please tell me a card I could get in my budget.

My build:
Amd Propus 620 Quad core 2.6ghz @ 3.3
2gb of ddr2 gskill ram
Biostar t-series motherboard
LSP 550 watt psw
500gb barracuda hard-drive
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate

Flip a coin, but your first thought might be to upgrade your system RAM first. 2GB w/W7U64 is a weeeee bit on the lean side.

if you can find another 9$ (+3 more for shipping) you should get the 6850 ^-^

The highest option you can get for 170 or less (not a few dollars over) is a 460 with 768 mb. This is a slower card than the 1gb and the 6850.

Id recammend trying to find another 12 bucks or so and getting a 6850, its worth the extra 12.

I love how you put everything there EXCEPT FOR your resolution. Come on, man...

If 1080p or less I'd get a GTX460-768MB and overclock it. Assuming that your PSU isn't complete crap. What is LSP?

What I am using is 1280 X 1024 for now... I was looking at the 6850 and it looked really nice and all of the comments and ratings were really good to... The games I will mostly be playing is medal of honor and gta 4. I am also getting 2gb of gskill ram so i will have 4GB.

The Sapphire would bed a very good choice. I read a review of it and the non-reference fan it uses is a good bit quieter than the stock AMD fan. Do you have any plans to get a larger monitor anytime soon? If so, what resolution?

Some people would disagree, but don't buy a particular card on the basis that you are going to OC it. You might be unlucky and end up with a card that won't OC. I have a 5770 that will only OC about 10MHz.

Get a 6850 and a new monitor.

A Sapphire 6850 at $180 with no rebates is the perfect choice to use for several years, even if you replace your monitor with a 16x10 or 19x10 later.

A GTX 460 768MB for $170 is a decent choice too if you have a strong preference for nvidia, but it is slower.

Guys, 1280x1024 is 1.31 megapixels. Compare to 1.76 megapixels of 16x10, or 2.3MP of 19x12. 6850 is overkill unless he plans to upgrade the monitor really soon. A GTX460-768 would be perfect since it has the best price/perf in the midrange segment, and 768MB is far more than enough for 1280x1024.

+$10 for future proofing and up to 20% faster speed in some games makes the 6850 a better investment if he plans to use the card for more than a year.

I wouldn't say that for +$50, but $10? Skip a movie, have soup for lunch, or don't buy a couple of lattes and you're there.

Future resist with a 6850. a 20% speed increase can go a looooooooong way in putting off a future purchase.

Newegg has the 5770 for 109.00 AR and code and Ewiz has the 6850 for 175.00 AR and code. Both are listed on Tech Bargains with the codes... I'm personally trying to decide what to get to upgrade my 9600 GSO 384. I'm a light gamer and my monitor is a 1600x1200 Dell Ultrasharp. Won't be replacing it any time soon since I like the 4x3 aspect ratio. Rest of the system is a X6 1075T at 3.5, 6 GB RAM.
Can the 5770 do morphological AA?

NV cards run faster in both of these games:

GTX 460 768mb ~ $140 or $140 is more than enough for 1280x1024 and will be significantly faster than HD5770/5830 in these 2 games at that resolution.

Heck, at that resolution the overclocked Zotac GTS 450 (the 875mhz core clock one) for $139 on NewEgg wouldn't be a bad idea either really.

Though the rebats on those 460 768MB's posted above make those hard to pass up since they are both $140 as well after rebate, however I'm not sure if your PSU has 2 PCIe connectors so you'd likely have to use an HDD adapter for one of the 6 pin connectors (which is no big deal).

/Those rebates expire today, btw if you have yet to make up your mind.

He won't be able to use AA with Nvidia or older Radeon cards. The prospect of using AA in GTA4 at 1280x1024 is a huge bonus in my book.

Also the OP said this:

Sounds like he will be upgrading the monitor at some time.

At the same time prices on videocards tend to fall fast. He can grab a $140 card now and when he upgrades the monitor to something larger, it'll probably be better to sell the 460 768mb and put the $30-50 savings he would have now from not getting a 460 1GB/6850 towards a faster card in 6 months from now. He is only playing at 1280x1024 for which GTX460 768mb will max out almost every game. Alternatively, he could wait for price drops on GTX460 1GB/HD6850 cards. I found 1 GTX460 1GB for $170, but the brand isn't tier 1.

RS is the voice of reason as usual. I agree, the notion of futureproofing is dubious whenever you have a situation where the product depreciates a lot faster than inflation. GPU depreciation rates are usually very high. Inflation is low. Just buy what you need now and upgrade later, when price/perf will be better.
