What card to buy...

So it's time to rebuild my computer again, and I've pretty much decided what I'm going to be buying. I'm getting an E6750, P35C-DS3R gigabyte board, and 2 gb of pc6400 cas latency 4 ram. Now I'm debating between which video card to get. I run a single monitor at 1280x1024 and I'm currently using an x800xl. The most intensive games that I would play are World of Warcraft/thinking of picking up Oblivion. The cards that I was thinking of are:

or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814130071

Would these cards prove overkill for what I need? Are there any better deals out there that would suit me better? Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah that's overkill for 1280x1024 and those games. Oblivion is pretty demanding, but a $150ish X1950XT will do VERY nicely, and save you a boatload of $$$.

If WoW and Oblivion will be all you are gonna play for a while, then definately go for a 150$ saphire x1950xt, they are selling for 150$ish on newegg, assuming you can order from there.

By the time you need dx10 capabilities, and more power like the 8800gts 320mb offers, there will be better cards, or those cards will have dropped significantly in price. If you want to play upcoming dx10 titles, like crysis, play games like Assasins Creed, and UT2003, ET: qauke wars, you could consider getting the 8800gts 320mb though. Otherwise you spend 150$ on a dx9 card now, and need a new one as soon as one of those games come out.

But if all that is not the case, YES, x1950xt !

at 1280*1024 theres no difference between the 320 and the 640mb version. I doubt it will be any different with Crysis. The question is, will a 8800gts be enough for Crysis :)

doubtful

according to the devs, sli'd ultras and quad core won't be able to run it DX10 and everything fully maxed out .. they said it would be a couple of years before the top rigs are not challenged by it

and i don't think they mean it is optimized or coded poorly ... DX10 is pretty demanding on HW ... especially when you want to see [for example] HQ multi-sampling and HDR correct AA.

So how is anyone suppose to play Crysis then ? At 640x480, like when all did with Doom 3 with low details ?

in DX9 ;)

fine for mid-range rigs with details down but still challenging to the top rigs

i can play DX10 CoJ with my GTS 640OC .... but it is not fluid ...not unless i drop AA to zero and turn details down to medium ... and that looks not quite as good as DX9c with everything maxed fully plus 4xAA

i would need sli'd GTSes to appreciate CoJ with everything maxed using the DX10 pathway ... maybe even some AA
