what card is the best gaming card for an AGP mobo?

Hey All
I have the very first generation ATI X800P video card and on my current system Quake-4 at times will slow down so instead of doing a serious upgrade I was hoping to just upgrade my video card, or is that not worth it due to the AGP technology?

Thanks

X850XT PE is the highest you can go. 6800Ultra is next. If you're planning on upgrading, a new motherboard might be wise, since the next time you do you will likely have to buy one anyway.

You might be better off investing in a new motherboard/processor as I doubt you're going to see a huge increase from your current X800 Pro. The ASRock Dual939-SATAII motherboard has both an AGP and PCI-E slot so you can use your X800Pro with it, but can upgrade to a PCI-E card later on down the road. Plus, since it's Socket 939, you have plenty of CPU choices available depending on your budget.

Serious?

an X800XT or above is quite bit faster than a X800 Pro

Upgrade your m/b+cpu to the x1800/7800 models. Your x800pro is very good for your system already.

Yes, but for the price of having to buy a new video card I don't think the increase in performance would really be worth it. By upgrading to a new motherboard/faster processor he'll still get a performance increase now and have the ability to easily upgrade later.

Yeah, I can agree with that.

Anyways at this point in the game I would recommend the OP sell his Pro and buy a used XT if he doesn't want to replace most of his system. If he doesn't mind replacing everything then the ASrock mobo would be perfect.

I did the above and it was a perfect way to go. Let me hang on to my 6800gt ap until I was ready to fork over the cash for a 7800gt and still upgrade to a dual core s939.

I think the X800XT PE takes top honors in the majority of games. The question has to be asked if spending that much on a video card makes sense considering you can get a 7800 or X1800 which beat that card for probably the same price.

I'd upgrade to Pci-express as it is the newer technology now. A x850 XT is the same price as a 7800 gt. I just think it would be more wise to upgrade to pci express and get more out of your money.

I'm thinking about doing the same exact thing in the very near future.

Hey Guys,
And thanks for all of your replies as they are appreciated. A little history about me, I've built many, many, computers for people but just the standard PC for web-surfing and kids doing their homework and only a few gaming machines for my gaming friends :)

Although, for the past 3/4 years I've always built my gaming machines and my latest gaming machine that was for me was about 1 1/2 years ago with the Asus A7N8X ver.2.0 mobo, AMD 3000+, 2700DDR at the time and one about two weeks ago I built for my good friends brother (who just got addicted to gaming at almost 48 :) )

So after building him a very modern system, AMD 3500 (939), Asus A8N - SLI, 1Gig 3200 DDR. I now realize that it might be time for me to upgrade my mobo and CPU. I really like the
socket 939 but I am undecided about getting the "ASrock mobo" and using the AGP video card and then upgrading to the PCI-E card at sometime or just bite the bullet and get a new mobo/cpu/pci-e video card all at once :)

Thats why I had asked about what AGP video card is the best for gaming 'cause if there was one AGP that really stood out I thought I would just buy that and stay with my current system, but I think the upgrade bug had got once again. I just haven't follwed all of the latest technology about mobos and cpu's the last year or so...oh-well, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do ;)

Any advice on mobo-cpu combo (targeted for a gamer) is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone for all of your assistance.

Regards,
CA

X850 for sure but with such an investment it may pay to upgrade to PCIe to ensure your upgrade path is open in the future.

I've been following this thread closely because I'm grappling with the same issues on upgrading, whether to stick with AGP for another year or so or to move to a PCI-e system.

Probably my decision is alot easier than the gent with X800 pro, since I have a 6600gt and would notice a much bigger boost in performance by going to an X800xt.

Lately I've been seeing incredible deals for All-in Wonder X800xt AGPs. I can get one for $299. So my decision is just about made basically, thats what I'll likely go for.

Should serve me well for another year or so. A year is a looong time in the PC market. I'm sure my options will have expanded considerably by then.

Cheers

That Asrock is nice for $78. Once I sell my 2005FPW and / or other stuff I may go that route.

Ok, here's what I've come up with for my ugrade :) I actually can't wait. I'll get it around the end of November as where I work I can sell back my sick leave and so I will use
that for my upgrade :)

Mobo: MSI K8N Neo 4 SLI Platinum

CPU: AMD64 4000

Video Card: MSI Geforce 7800GTX
