I don't have experience with multiple screens and a non-technical friend asks for my advice on what video card to buy in order to drive 3 screens, but with different orientations and possibly different resolutions.

I've done a few searches and it seems PLP is only limited to Tonga based cards, is that right? I don't know if he's going to use PLP specifically, I only know that they're not all going to be in landscape position.

I should specify that this setup is not for games, but Win7 Aero desktop.

So what would you recommend?

The limitation you're thinking of is for Eyefinity, which allows multiple monitors to be treated as one big monitor for gaming. For normal desktop use, this isn't an issue; PLP is supported just fine on pretty much anything. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I have tested a landscape monitor flanked with a portrait monitor on my 7870 (an old GCN 1.0 card) with no trouble. This is all supported by Windows 7 itself in the display control panel, you don't even need to open CCC.

So the answer is that you can use pretty much any modern card, as long as it has adequate ports for the monitors you're using.
